67 SS hood photos needed
« on: October 08, 2021, 09:09:48 PM »
Ok I am putting this out there so we can try to get a CRG report on SS hoods finished up. What do we need?

67 SS396 hood (top and bottom views)

67 SS350 hood (bottom view) needs to be as early in the year as possible.

Thanks in advance!

Aside from the 67 having no drain holes, there is another round hole that wasn't stamped where the hinge is bolted to the hood. I can take pictures from my 04B 67 when I get home next week.

I'm asking if there is a difference between 350 and 396. That's how I was reading the post.

Do you still want photos if the factory insulation is still in place?

Yes there is.

Need photos of top without inserts in place, and underside without insulation in place. The SS hood on my L35/M40 does not seem to be original or I would use that.

What I should have said was I’d say that’d be one difference from early vs mid-late 67 SS hoods.

Well we can’t for sure log all of the differences without pics. Under hood light - YES - that is one. But there are other differences under the hood.

There are a bunch of people that have spent a lot of time trying to log and document. The report was started and stalled maybe at least 5-6 times. Ed, I and others are trying to revive and complete it.

The easiest way is to show with pics. I had some but can’t find them. Another CRG member had some on an old PC but has not been able to retrieve so far.

Ok I have seen pics of an 11B SS hood but it’s the SS 396 type, they started the change before the 396 came out or the hood on that car was not original. Rogers car is too late.

Can anyone provide pics of and SS 350 hood from October 1966 or earlier?

Thank you!

It seems the sheet metal guys were way ahead of the production lines when implementing changes for future options ( holes for spoilers too, the 67 B hood is stamped 43 =  week of 10.24.66)
Hood seems to be properly dated and original as the rest of the car but I was only 4 yrs old when it was built. We may have to change the designation of SS350, 396 type to early and late type.

Not sure what you mean.

Once the changeover was made to the SS 396 type, the hoods can be used for any application.

The problem is, there seems to be an overlap.

Some later SS350 cars still got the early type hood, while others did not. That is why we are looking for data from original cars that FOR SURE have the original hood.

The early hoods seem to be weaker, more susceptible to bending, because of less reinforcement of the inner structure.

I mean the sheet metal was changed long before the production line changeover occurred. (my 08E 68 has a trunk lid holes pressed for a spoiler that was not yet an option)
Do you mean that the factory was stamping two styles at the same time ?  I doubt that.
I believe a better indicator would be the stamped date on the hood regardless of motor size. My understanding is that most components were not stored and were supplied as production orders
were requested. What is the latest 67 SS that got the first design hood? original owner ?

Overlap on being used on cars. I can not confirm both stamped at the same time, but I believe there was more than one stamping setup.

Although it seems like a big waste of money, both hoods were used in production! SS-350 cars got the 3898129 hood and SS-396 cars got the 3909158 hood.

As a matter of fact, the 67 SS-350 hood didn't get superseded by the 67 SS-396 hood in service until November of 1970.

Production changes often involve many components. Changes to components were often made early if possible to enable the overall change. Way better to be done with a running change than involved with the implementing a coordinated change - they were a PITA sometimes.

ED,
Would that mean all 350 cars have the first design hood ? photos should be plentiful.
Other than the production week stamp is there a part # stamped somewhere ?
 Byron,
If its me causing you stress, sorry. I am simply trying to learn. The fact that the week stamped on my hood lines up with the cars production date leads me to believe the hood is original, could be wrong but
quickly dismissing something we have no facts for is puzzling, we are a research group. You mentioned the early hoods were weak with less reinforcement, is there a picture of any quality of the bottom
  of a first design ?
Thanks for the help and what you do,

FYI. There is a 67 SS hood on Yenko in the parts for sale section. Not mine and I have no knowledge if it is assembly line or not. I also don't know if the photos shown are of any benefit, but one could ask for additional if interested.

Yeah, I posted here before the date code photo was added. I presume that makes it a late Oct early Nov '66 hood.
