Need help on this engine code
« on: April 10, 2007, 09:28:50 PM »
This is not a 1st gen question but I know that the folks up here have seen a lot of engine pads...here it is:

From a '73 Type LT camaro wiht the 4bbl configuration.  I've never seen a partial VIN on top of the build date like this.  since the plants moved away from stamping the partial VIN on the engine  pad in '69 shouldn't a '73 have the partial VIN down by the oil filter?  I know that a lot of things could happen on the assembly line so  it is possible to end up like this but I want to  know how probable

The stamping lines up with  the car  VIn has "K" code for 4bbl 350, and an AT...CKD works here.

car is built 07C and the build date on engine is "V0712"

the partial VIN of "(9)3055" matches the last of the VIN (the "9" is not very visible in the photo)

Any thoughts appreciated

"CKD" was used in '73  & '74 for a 350 with hydramatic transmission and California emmissions.  Sorry, can't help you with the partial VIN questions.

Thanks for the response..the codes are not really the problem for me.  As I mentioned, the CKD matches the K code in the VIN...I am really surprised to see the partial VIN on the pad and not by the oil filter and I've never run across a VIN stamp this badly overlapping the build date.

THe concensus at the 2nd gen site is that it it is legit.  I wanted to float it past a group of people whom I know spends a lot of time looking at engine stampings ;D

thanks again...

Joe,
I've seen a few pads where the stamps overlapped like this. Not common, but it happened.

Thanks Kurt, it helps to have your input on this.  Follow up : Shouldn't  the partial VIN be down by the oil filter as it was done for many '69s?

i cant see the beginning of that number, but alot of times, a bebuilder will stamp numbers onto a block so they can keep track of when it was rebuilt and what was done to it.
