1969 Z11 Info Pace Car or Clone? VIN 124679N624975
« on: July 26, 2021, 03:24:34 PM »
Greetings all, I have my eyes on this 1969 and wonder if anyone knows any history on it or anything we can glean from the VIN.  I decoded the VIN and realize it is a V8 convertible our of Norwood, but wonder if anyone has seen the car before or knows anything about it other than what I can see from the photos.  Thanks so much.

Well, typical of dealers, consignors and flippers, no pictures showing any of the important things were posted, so without those, who knows what it is!

If you're interested in the car, get at MINIMUM the following high resolution pictures:

1. VIN
2. Trim Tag
3. Engine suffix code on the front passenger pad
4. Transmission code
5. Axle code
6. Any and all original documentation the seller may have

Post it here and we should be able to tell you more.

It's on ebay.

Poor amateur restoration. Many reproduction and non-original parts.

No, you're going to have to post high resolution pictures. There are just too many fakes out there.

Jhere1, generally it seems the likelihood a rare car posted on eBay is a fake is similar to what you’d think if you saw a Picasso posted on eBay.  Read thru threads on the Decoding / Numbers to get a sense of what’s out there.  I’m just a lurker on the threads and can only say beware.  These guys here are experts and it’s a good idea to follow the consensus advice

The VIN is beyond the normal range for an 03D body tag date. That can happen if the order was released at Fisher and immediately went on hold. That happened with our '67 Z/28 project; 06E tag built mid-July with 07B cars. Original engine was V0706MO. Obviously, someone checked and found no 302 engines in stock; car could not be built. So the build order went on hold until MO engines were in stock.

In this case tag looks ok, rivets fishy. Only reason an L48/auto Z11 would have gone on hold is an out of trust dealership. Probably would have built it anyways. Tag may have been swapped from a scrapped Z11. Some signs are standard seat belts, drum brake master, no ZL2 wiring. Like to see the area around the fuse block.

No matter, it’s a hack resto. Bad body work, repro/non-OE/missing parts, 48” PS hose lying on the exhaust manifold alongside a plug wire. Mis-matched horns? Geez…

Thanks Bill.

Kevin, we received your pictures and I asked Bill to comment, but I also replied to your email with some of the things that stood out to me.

One thing I'd like to add to this is that (in my opinion), the car isn't worth the $65k the dealer is asking. Cut that price in half and you're in the ball park. The previous ebay auctions bear this out.

AUCTION 1 went to $39,100

AUCTION 2 went to $40,201

There are just too many things wrong (including the non-original engine with all the "bling") to make this a high dollar car. As Bill eluded to, it's not a very professional looking restoration. Look at the paint chips on the passenger head light door and the scratches/scrapes in the paint on the passenger side fender where the bumper is. Things like that, and the lack of attention to detail like the aftermarket antenna, the Auto Zone brake booster and the mile long power steering hose keeps this car in the lower price range.

But again, like I said in the email I sent you, if you're really serious about the car, contact Jerry and have him inspect the car before you fly out.

Man, and I thought I had seen some bad assemblies of headlight door covers and reproduction bumpers until I saw this one. Makes me proud of my Z11 driver, which is a heck of a lot more original than this one.

My 03D Z11 starts with 620XXX, not 624. Kinda distant -
