According to Jerry's book, page 57:
Master cylinder was natural cast.

There is debate on this. Vintage photos show masters painted black; the theory is the paint did not adhere well and quickly fell off. Current judging allows either finish.

I'm looking at the March 1967 issue of Car and Driver, their first test of the Z/28.  A black and white under the hood photo (page 38) shows the master cylinder in a natural cast color as compared to the black cowl plenum air cleaner, radiator, etc.

The masters were all painted black by the supplier. This has been confirmed by JohnZ.
It was cheap paint on a raw casting and it did not hold up.

Judging allows either, but they were black originally.

The master cylinder on my original owner 68 L30/M20 was painted black.  It's good to know that I was correct painting it black again after restoration.
