I'm in the same boat with a July late July built '68 it has the 5500 tack with 4 speed and air that has a transplant motor and transmission, however it does have the original 3:55 rear end which according to the suggested power train groups should have been the  L-34, but it could have been ordered as an option for both L-35 and L-78, the last owner tore apart the head liner looking for a build sheet, never found one so unless I win the lottery when I get ready to restore and find one on the gas tank I may never know which engine it originally came with.

Higher chance it is NOT an L35. But you may never know. I assume you checked all of the other big block stuff?

Crossmember, radiator?

Was the blackout on the rear panel original? Satin finish?
