Rear axle decode question.
« on: April 01, 2007, 02:12:59 PM »
Yesterday I was working on the rear axle on my 69 camaro.  And got these numbers off of the housing and axle.  On the front of the pass. side axle were stamped C BP 1017 G1.  The best I can figure out is that it is a 2.73 ratio, 10 bolt non posi, Oct. 17, Detroit Gear 1st shift.  What does the C stand for?  My casting # is J89, foundry control # is CON1, test marks of 67890 and 12345.  What do those numbers mean?  Thanks.

C - Chevrolet

Seems 1970 axle codes all had a C as a prefix on them.  Shows in the parts catalog

CON1 is just a factory Control number, how the indentified the casting.

ALl these mean is you got a one of 10 million made.

"CON1" is foundry shorthand for "Conveyor #1", which is the molding line the casting was poured on.  :)

Given what John just provided and looking under the "1967-69 Camaro Drivetrain Decoding" button for CRG Research Topics; the image, specifically the CON1 description, provided by Steve Brown might be better if revised or an update note added that makes it clear what CON actually represents.  The image is near the bottom and is titled "1967-69 Camaro Rear Axle Casting Date".  Just down the page from where this link takes you http://www.camaros.org/drivetrain.shtml#RearAxleNumbers.
