1969 Production Numbers
« on: October 17, 2020, 12:20:32 PM »
I have a '69 SS L48 (350/300) with VIN ending in 690228 and an X11 code on the trim tag.

Trying to figure out how many were built.  I know that total Camaro production for that year was 243,085.  I followed some of CRG's deciphering and figured out that 187,185 out of that total were non-SS cars.  From there, CRG walks you through what percent of the remaining 55,910 were Super Sports with X11 code.

Well, I managed to get myself totally confused with 9% of this and 5% of that and couldn't quite come up with a number!  If there any scientists out there that can help interpret this stuff (someone from CRG, perhaps?), I'd appreciate it!

Here's what I found in CRG literature:

So, how many cars were coded X11?
Some quick math yields that 77% of 1969 Camaros were non-SS and non-Z28. After Dec 68, these cars would be coded X11 and X44. Multiplying the that percentage with the percentage of cars that had style trim or RS (58%) yields a little more than 44% of X-coded 69's were non-SS X11's. A similar calculation on the SS350 (9% of 69's) production quantity yield that less than half would be X55, the balance would be X11, about 5%. Adding these totals together shows the total of X11-coded cars to be approximately 50% of all 1969 X-codes. The corollary is that only about one in ten of X11-coded cars are actually SS350's.

There is no way to know how many Norwood cars were coded X11.

X11 was Norwood only so all Van Nuys production can be excluded: 31,163. Norwood built about 59,500 Camaros prior to X codes so those have to be excluded. The excluded production contains SS350 cars so those would have to be factored out of the total along with everything else, such as style trim and rally-sport. Norwood Z11s have to be excluded also; there are no production numbers for those.

With all the guessing involved [aka extrapolation], whatever number you come up with would be useless.

I thought the Z11 production was known(3675?), but the Z10 was not.  Or is my 63 year old memory off?

How many were built at Norwood is not known. A later NOR SS-RS 350 would have an X11 code but Z11s [and Z10s] did not. They would have to be excluded from Rally-Sport production.

Also, Chevy buried COPO Camaro production [1,066] in the L78 total. Some early style trim COPOs are X22, most are X11.

Perhaps a plausible formula could be this: there were 22,339 SS 350 Camaros made. Out of the 243,085 total 69 production, this is just over 9% of total prod. are SS350s. This could be further broke down between convertible vs coupe (just a guess, but perhaps, 3% vs 6% respectively). Multiply that % X  monthly total for Norwood for that given month and a pretty close approximation could be determined, I would say.
I cannot recall for sure, but I believe Pace Cars are part of that SS total and may have to be factored out of total Which may affect % I use for monthly estimations slightly.
Bentley to friends :1969 SS/RS 396 owned 79

1969 Camaro production figures through the end of August show that: (August was not final)
20,544 350/300 engines were produced. Unfortunately the combination with a s-spd manual trans is combined for 350/300 and 350/255 engines. The total is: 3,454 or 1.65%
For the same period records show: 10,406 350/255's were produced.

Tailfins and Bowties has numbers through 12/31/69. L48, 22,339.

Did you mean the MC1 HD 3-speed trans? T & B shows 3,079.

Listen to william.

It really doesn't matter how many were X11.  What you really want to know is how many were L48.

How many L48's? 22,339
How many L48's with X11? Not seeing the relevance.
My math (which is on the CRG numbers page) is solid on figuring out how many X11 cars percentage-wise. About 50%. It shows that 9 out of 10 are NOT SS's.  But the actual # is meaningless and speculative.

Hi Kurt,
It shows that 1 out of 10 are NOT SS's.
Is that right?
