Subframe marking
« on: September 28, 2020, 12:46:22 AM »
I am working on a 68 and the subframe and bottom of the car is coated in a waxy substance from the late 70s. Maybe ziebart?
I tried the hot water power washer today and it took most of it and the paint off and found this under the paint.  Could be a H.
Nothing too exciting but interesting

I found a small lime green drop of paint on the top side but not sure where it came from.  That is all I found.  The wax substance was on so good it might have taken anything else off. Sad thing is, its all over the bottom of the car.  I might rent a steam power washer the next time if I can find one

Better shot.  Its interesting,  the welds on one side of this frame is a lot better than other side

My interpretation of the mark is that it is two "X"'s.

Which side is better than the other ? Reason I ask - my driver's side of the subframe was apparently "autographed" by the welder on the side of the subframe with "maybe" his/her initials, welded in place with the same appearance as the rest of the brackets, butts and overlaps. I would guess that more than one welder assembled frames, but I don't have a clue as to assembly protocols. Do we have a clue as to the subframe supplier ? Anyone else ever seen this ?

Regards,
Steve

I found something like that on a 12C X66 I did 7 years ago yellow markings on the subframe pass side just in front of the front wheel centerline.

My drivers side has a lot nicer welds.  Some of the slag was not even knocked off
