1967 with both RS and SS packages. What stays on the car?
« on: August 31, 2020, 12:22:07 AM »
So I searched the forums. I've poured over the options sheet and tried to decipher what a 67 SS/RS (RS/SS) would have come with as far as appearance items....

And by that I mean this... I understand what the RS package did to a Camaro, but if it was ALSO ordered as an SS, having the 350 due to being early in the production run, would the car have a louvered hood? Would you be able to get the bumblebee nose stripe? What badges would have been on a dual optioned car? "rs" on the front fenders? "ss"? How would the car have appeared when both packages were installed? Would the hood have been non-louvered due to it being an RS, or louvered because it was an SS. Would 350 badges been on it, or RS?

How would an early production dual packaged car appear?

(Maybe ED can offer some insight)

Thank you!

My early 396 RS SS had a louvered hood and nose stripe. SS gas cap after 396 came out, SS 350 before. SS on front fenders.

And your 396 SS is original? So you COULD get an SS car with the added RS package and it would
NOT take away the louvered hood (because it was an RS), the louvered hood stayed, and the fender badges went from "rs" to saying "SS"... is this correct?

What month was your 396 built? I'm assuming spring of '67?

Maroman, did your car come with the stacks on the hood or fins? Fins were use in all SS cars in 67 as per this link http://www.camaros.org/exterior.shtml#SSHood. Stacks were use in 1968 if that is what you were referring to louvered hood.

Your car should have everything a SS would've had in 1967. Hood with fins. SS fender emblems. SS350 grill emblem, SS350 gas cap. SS horn button. I don't know if it said SS350 (have to look). 350 fender emblems with lover emblem on rear part of front fender. SS was dominant over RS so nothing emblem wise would've been different. Nose stripe & I believe body side pinstripes also. Rally sport is of course hidden lights, solid tail lights with back up lights below. Special rocker & door lower trim. Hope I got all that correct...Joe

The SS 350 on the grille emblem and gas cap were on early cars, and phased out when the big blocks were introduced.  Depending which steering wheel was ordered, you may or may not have the center steering wheel emblem.

I know it since new. I'm thinking it was built in April, have to check.

Body side pinstriping was included in the RS package.

Also worth noting is that the pinstripes were available with the Z21 Style Trim package.

Okay. All sounds good and what I was thinking. I had someone tell me that the hood of an SS/RS would have been smooth and not with the finned inserts (not sure exactly what you'd call them: louvered? Finned?) Anyway, I thought that was wrong. I figured you got the RS appearance items but will all the SS stuff replacing badging, etc... and then the SS hood.

Would the pin striping still have come on a car with the nose stripe? Or does addition of the nose stripe get rid of the pin striping it within the RS package?

(Thanks all for the input! Much appreciated)

I found this paragraph here....Joe

Optional Stripes

1967
Starting in April 67 and continuing through the end of the model year, the D91 stripe (aka front accent band) was available for non-SS, non-Z28 cars. Cars with the Rally Sport (RS) option had a gap in the D91 stripe (like the SS cars) for the RS emblems. On non-SS and non-RS cars, there was no gap in the stripe. Pinstriping was not available as an RPO, but was included with Style Trim or Rally Sport

The SS 350 on the grille emblem and gas cap were on early cars, and phased out when the big blocks were introduced.  Depending which steering wheel was ordered, you may or may not have the center steering wheel emblem.

Gas cap and grill emblem just became SS on all cars once the SS 396 started Being produced.

If my memory is right, early SS 350 cars did not get the flag fender emblem behind the front wheel.

And to add, I'm pretty sure the later 67 SS grill emblem was flat on the bottom, not humped to follow the 'S' like the inaccurate repo's show.

Its a shame you can't rely on many of the factory photos from '67. Many are pre-production and not like they actually built. And there were so many combinations of options it is hard to figure out what should be. This picture is of my car when it was 2 or 3 months old, gotten from the original owner. I know the car since then.
