Temp guage reading
« on: August 02, 2020, 03:20:27 PM »
I have a 69 z with the 302. What is the 'normal' temp guage reading?

After starting and driving the car, the temp guage moves slowly (within about 5 minutes) from cold to 3/4 of the way to the top (just below the grey shaded area below the 'H') and stays there. This is in 80 to 90 degree weather.

The engine does not seem especially hot. I also used an infrared thermometer. The top radiator hose read about 175 degrees and the bottom hose read about 155 degrees.

Those factory 'gauges' are one step above idiot lights. If your concerned about the status of the engine, quality after market gauges are the way to go.  According to your thermal gun your engine is operating normally, maybe a tad bit on the cool side.

My stock DZ and stock gauge register a little below midpoint even on a pretty hot day. I haven't checked the hose with my infrared gun but will next time I have it out and think about it. The coolant level is about 3" from the top for what that's worth.
