Legends - You don't know jack about Camaros
« on: May 09, 2020, 09:29:10 PM »
We're looking to update Legends for a number of areas. One area is the jack assembly. Tried to follow the threads on here but we are looking at more details. Most of the cars we see are Norwood with the Universal jack assembly. Only a couple of LA cars which should have the Walker jack.  Jack handles - aka lug wrenches - 1967 and 1968 seem to be one style and 1969 another . All have the raised O on the socket. The 1968 has a longer or deeper socket than the 1969. Does this seem true with what the Group has seen ?

There's been tons of discussion about jacks & handles here in the past. Even jacks for LA & NOR are different...Joe

As with most components, there was probably more than one supplier.

Yep.

In 67 there were 4 jacks listed in the AIM, therefore 4 suppliers:

3909107
3909108
3909109
3909113

In 68 there were again 4 jacks listed in the AIM, so again, 4 different suppliers:

3909107
3909108
3909113
3927456

In 69 they cut it down to 2 jacks, so 2 suppliers:

3841913
3909148

I've been looking at the part numbers for 1969, and wondering why there would be 2. Surely the same spec part from different suppliers would still have only one part number, otherwise the AIM would have far more parts listed, especially for fasteners.
It can't be the difference between standard and VE3 bumpers, as the load rest hooks have their own part number.
Is it possible that coupe and convertible jack masts had some minor difference(s), due to the stowing orientation noted in UPC10?

Well, we already know there was more than one style used. Square and trapezoid. The 3841913 is an older number, probably released in the early 1960's. There's no history on that part number in any of the P&A's, so I can't comment on it. The 3909148 was ONLY used on the 69 Camaro, but some of the jacks for the 67 and 68 Camaro were used on other models and even divisions as well!

3909107 - 1867 & 1968 Camaro only

3909108 - 1967 & 1968 Camaro, 1967 Nova & Chevelle (except station wagons & El Caminos) and 1965 & 1966 Buick 30-4000 models (Note that both the November, 1968 P&A 691A and the February, 1969 P&A 30 also show this jack being used in 1967-1969 Camaros although it's not shown in the 1969 AIM)

3909109 - 1967 Camaro only

3909113 - 1967 & 1968 Camaro only

3927456 - No history on this part

3841913 - No history on this part

3909148 - 1969 Camaro only

The load rests are a completely different story! There are several versions used on a ton of different cars and trucks!

Interesting topic.

I think my dad still has about 50-60 GM application jacks leftover from parting out different cars over the years.

In 67 there were 4 jacks listed in the AIM, therefore 4 suppliers:
That is a poor assumption. The number of part numbers has no correlation with the number of suppliers.
Normally, for a given high-volume part number, GM would have multiple suppliers tool up.

There were four jack suppliers of note for the automotive industry.
The main supplier for NOR was Universal. They made the trapezoid (keystone) shaped cross section jacks and normally there is a U or UN stamped on the jack.
Ryerson & Haynes (RH) also made trapezoid shaped shafts.
Ausco made the t-shaped shafts (possibly used at LOS in 67).
Walker made the square shafts.

You'd have to pull prints to see what is different between the different jacks to understand the applications.
Here's a pic of some of the bases in 69. I know the last one in the group of four is a newer one....

(hat-tip to Dave Liukkonen for some of that info!)

Ok, so you say it's a poor assumption that there were 4 suppliers then you state there were 4 suppliers.

I'm out.

Yes, and in 69, there were still 4 suppliers to the auto industry, but if we follow your thinking, there's only two.
Rewording slightly: "The number of part numbers is not connected to the number of suppliers."

Great topic and great info.  Thank you all!

Are all the masts that have been viewed the same length regardless of style (square vs trap)

So has it been concluded that all 69 Norwood cars came with the trapezoid mast and all 69 LA cars the square mast?

I have only seen the Ryerson & Haynes and the Ausco ( marked AB I believe ) on the A body cars. Not familiar with them used on the first gen Camaros. Thanks for the photos

The deeper hex would have made sense as a change for 1969 - being that the SS wheel with the capped lug nuts really required a deeper recess because of the taller crown on the stainless cap.

Not sure if you'd like to add this data into the new research topic thread, or start afresh, but there's quite a lot of contributions in this thread: http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=13242.0;all

Tim,
Sorry, I had CRS (can't remember sh1t) and totally forgot that thread. I moved it into the correct forum, updated it, and deleted my topic. :)
Thanks!

I'm confused on date codes for jacks.  I have an original 69 jack that has a date of 8M stamped on the rivet.  What date, December of 68?

8M should be Dec 1968. They probably didn't use the letter "I"....Joe

I had to go and look it up again, but here's the explanation on GM-produced parts, from the 'numbers decode' section. Presumably the same date coding was applied to externally-supplied components:
Quote
For cast-in date codes on GM-produced iron and aluminum castings (engine blocks, heads, intakes, water pumps, etc.), the letter "I" was used for September, and the last month of the calendar year (December) was the letter "L". For stamped-in date codes on GM-produced components (alternators, distributors, starters, etc.), the letter "I" was not used - "I" was skipped, and "J" became September, with December being "M".
