8701110 Rear SS emblem

I'm trying to find a NOS SS emblem for my 69 SS, pn 8701110. The problem I'm finding is it's not paint like the assm line emblem. Has anybody else ran into this? Just trying to figure the history on this part. Here's a picture of my original on the left & a NOS on the right. Thank you, Joe

NOS is not necessarily the same as original. As a matter of fact, most of the time it's not. It's something that Chevrolet supplied to "fit and perform" as original. They didn't care about how it looked. Most NOS parts you find today aren't even close to being original and/or "correct".

I think it was just a difference in the masking of the emblem when it was sprayed black. The chrome is intact under a very thin coat of black on the sides of the "SS" characters, you can likely scrape the paint off and polish the chrome on the NOS and produce a usable part. If your original is not pitted, you can always recondition it - masking might be tougher than brush painting (my hands are probably not steady enough anymore to brush it on). I might try the paint removal rather than paint addition when I replace mine. The NOS piece I just received looks identical to your NOS pic -

Thanks Steve. I've been doing the scraping action on the NOS one. Lots of time involved. GM paint sticks to chrome better than what I have for repainting. I've only done about an inch & it's taken a couple of hours. Oh well, I'm retired & stuck at home for the time being. I'll keep working on it...Joe

Looked at the one I got years ago and its painted the same way.  I never noticed that.

Try some brake clean or lacquer thinner on a Q-tip. I was going to repaint my chrome shifter bezel because the paint was chipped. After sanding I thought I'd use brake clean to remove residual dust off. It took the paint off instantly. I don't know how the factory applied the original, but my paint doesn't adhere as well, even with attempting to scuff the chrome.

You and me both - I "semi" retired in February, not even close for being used to it yet. I guess it takes a while to get used to it - maybe it;s just the isolation ?

Here is the 69 emblem I repainted for the SS conv I did years back,
I masked off the emblem and used an exacto to cut the painted area away did the white area first then masked and painted the black, used 1/4" wide tape around the raised areas and then masked the top of the letters again.

That's basically what I had to do with my original James. I has a couple of pits & that was why I was going to get a NOS. I did get one but discovered they're painted wrong...Thank you, Joe
