JL-8 Rear End? Thoughs On QX Code?
« on: March 03, 2020, 07:05:34 PM »
I am ignorant when it comes to Chevrolets.  I came across this rear end and need some help trying to verify it.  It seems like the axle code stamps I have seen over the years are a little different than this one.  I attempted to attach some photos but the files were too large.  I have some photos posted over on a Pontiac Forum I frequent.  Hopefully the link works.  Need some thoughts on this code/rear axle?  Thanks in advance.  Kyle.

With a casting date of A-3-8 (January 3rd, 1968), a stamping of 06-15 (June 15th, over 5 months later), and a QX code that doesn't appear to be a factory stamp, (not to mention that it's not in the correct format)... well, let's just say it doesn't follow the normative practice. However, I can't tell from the pictures if the axle tubes are tapered (factory JL8) or not (service JL8), so if you can take a good shot of where the axle tubes meet the backing plates, it might help. If they're tapered, there's no way it's original since the factory didn't release the JL8 for production until February of 1969. If they're not tapered, then theoretically it's possible since the service (over the counter) JL8 axle was released in March of 1968.

Yes, I saw those, and even though they appear to be tapered, it's still better to get close up shots.

Might not be original to a car but still pretty cool.

A 'service duty' rear is a much *better* rear than the 'stock' JL8, having much stronger axles and larger axle bearings and higher pressure springs and more plates in the POSI unit.   And this one has the parking brake incorporated.

Pretty cool? Yes. Factory (or over the counter)? I highly doubt it. From what I see it's not real and probably "made up". Especially since there are no known JL8 axles (factory OR service) that were built in Buffalo. In addition, the inner calipers are Corvette 5473806, whereas they should be Camaro 5469588 (right) or 5469589 (left).

I added a few more photos but not sure they will add any detail.  Thanks for the replies.  I added the link again.

No question to me that it's a restamp. Format is wrong.

I think it’s made up assembly, the welding on the housing tube end flanges and e brake cable guides does not look like GM. Plus the rotor dust shields look like later issue Corvette gold versions instead of silver. I agree with Kurt that the stamp is wrong.

Based on the replies here and because I know so little about Chevrolets I decided to pass on this rear end.  Apparently it was sold to someone else less than 24 hours later.  It will be interesting to see where it appears next.    Thanks everyone for their insight.
