1968 396 Oil capacity?
« on: March 19, 2020, 12:25:35 AM »
I'm taking the motor to be dynoed Monday. I added 5 quarts of oil and filter and primed the motor. The dipstick says I can add another quart of oil. I bought a GM dipstick(yellow tip), tube and oil pan when you could still buy them from GM. I'm leaning towards cutting the tube to get the correct reading. I'm thinking adding the extra oil could be detrimental to the motor. The pan is correct, the motors been in the car, has yellow tip dipstick, only leaves the tube. Was the 5 quarts with the filter a hard and fast number? Thanks Paul

Full size, truck and Corvette used a 5 quart pan; 6 quarts total. Camaro, Chevelle, Nova used a 4 quart pan.
Learning more and more about less and less...

I'm going to use my small tubing cutter to trim the appropriate length off of the dipstick tube and move on. Thanks

Depends which oil pan you have and what you are using for an oil filter.

See this - which Ed (bertfam) posted on a Corvette page. He uses a different handle there.

I had thought full size used a 5 qt pan, but I looked at the AMA specs and those seem to show 4 qt (plus more for the filter) just like Camaro, Chevelle, Nova. I will try to post a reference later.

I have the 4qt. pan and I'm using a wix racing filter 1qt. capacity. I think I'll hold off on the tubing cutter and do a little research on dipstick tube lengths. I'm going to compare 68/69 Corvette and Full size tube lengths.

Thanks for the link that was quite informative.
