Street Drag Racing back in 70's
« on: May 16, 2007, 11:43:20 AM »

There is almost nothing to equal to the excitement of the hole shot, popping the clutch at 3,000 rpm, flooring the gas pedal, feathering the pedal to keep from spinning the tires to much, power shifting to 2nd at 6,500 rpm hoping not to miss the gear, shifting to 3rd with about 750 rpm drop and in 4th gear reaching the finish line at about 6,500 rpm, of course with a 488 gear, I believe I needed a 513 gear.
All that in a few short seconds.

Most of my activity of that sort was back in the early eighties- being able to power shift was a badge of honor. The first time I saw someone do it- in a '69 SS 396 Chevelle I thought it was about the coolest thing- something I would need to learn how to do and master- and so I did. Years later, sometime in the '90's, I knew a guy with a 5.0 Mustang, who was always going on about how it would not run...so I took a chance ( as did he!), and I took him for a little ride, I grabbed some serious rubber through 3 gears- very sweet indeed- and he never viewed his car the same!  Power shifting is just plain violent and cool!
