1969 RSSS L78 Project
« on: December 02, 2019, 01:54:00 AM »
My dad and I acquired this 1969 RSSS L78 about a year ago. I thought I’d share progress and pictures with everyone!
Restoring the car in our garage!
Car has original motor and was originally an automatic. Got converted to a 4 speed very early on.
Fathom green with a black vinyl top and green deluxe interior.
Options: Tilt, U14 gauges, fold down seat, 8 track player, and rear antenna.
Car was repainted at some point in the 70s and hasn’t been painted since. Car was last on the road in 1982. Going to keep the black paint but interior is getting redone. The front end has been powder coated and the floors painted. A lot of original parts are getting rezinc plated. Restoring it original or with a little day 2 vibe.

We started with wet sanding and buffing the old paint job. Someone had put black primer all over it!
Then redid the whole front end and underside of the car. We cleaned, rebuilt, and repainted the rear end.
Now we are focusing on the interior!

Enjoy the photo album below!

Wanted to add this in a separate post:

The car was sold new at Appleway Chevrolet in Spokane Washington. I recently took a trip to where the car spent 90% of its life outside of Spokane. I talked to 3 of the old owners of the car and met with 2 of them!
Even got some vintage pictures! These guys owned the car from 1978-1990s

One of the pictures is from November 1983.

The other shows the car in full street machine form. It has a 1967 Chevelle L78 motor in it with a
tunnel ram and hood scoop!

If it really was a 1967 L78 from a Chevelle, it’s very rare. 612 produced.

Yes we bought the car from him. Is the car added into your data base? If not, I’d love to add it in!

My '72 Corvette, base 350 (+0.030") with Turbo400 and 3.36 gears also chirps second gear at full bore...  :) .. so your L78 should be slipping sideways when it hits 2nd..  :)

Looking good, lotsa progress.
You're welcome. I knew about the original block and pointed Mike in the right direction and he chased it down. :)
What's the stamped axle code?

Gary, my 2nd gear chirp is normal driving. Full bore 2nd is downright dangerous. My L78,s 355 axle code is BT I believe.

"Chirping 2nd gear." That's cute. ;-) If you aren't smoldering third you need a new power plant lol. Even with 3.31s I couldn't think about going full bore in 2nd. Just busting your chops Gary... I guess I need some better traction!
Absolutely love the look of your L78 Driveway_finds.
