1968 10 Bolt rearend upgrade
« on: December 24, 2023, 04:57:33 AM »
I have a 1968 Convertible that was a base with 210 HP and 2:73:1 gears with a Power Glide.  I am in the process of upgrading  and would like to convert the rear end to a lower gear (3:55 or 3:73) with posi traction. Is there a kit to make this change easily? If so, does anyone have a pointer? If not, any suggestions on making this change? Thanks!

I had a shop rebuild mine and added 3.55s, but next time I want to try it myself.  With 3.55s the power glide is better.  But I replaced the PG with a 200r4, but I wished I would have went with 3.73s with the 200r4 (if still avail?) Luck!

Suggestion. Add the Posi and go with 3.36 gear. It’s a compromise. 3.73 won’t be good for gas mileage and it’s a big change from what you have.

The rear end will need to be taken all apart for the change. There are a few specialty tools needed.

The parts to do this are readily available, but I would recommend a shop that has the tools to do it. If GM had only gone the Ford way for rear ends….

You can get an idea of what gear ratio is best suited for your Camaro if you replace your present tires with low-profile wheels if you have some available.

I think the 3.36 might be best also. Especially if you are leaving the 210hp stock.
