Vin Number
« on: March 17, 2019, 02:23:42 AM »
Per the CRG the Vin number for a 1969 Camaro Convertible should be 124679N5XXXXXX

My 1969 Pace car Vin is 124679N6XXXXXX

This same "6" is on the POP, cowl stamping, firewall stamping, dash and original paperwork.

What did I miss?

Read this again around the bottom right of the table.  Both plants started with N5xxxxx at the beginning of the 1969 model year, then at Norwood progressed through N6xxxxx and ended at N711922 through their extended production year.

What's the week build on the tag ? Pacers started around the 4th week in February, ended in early May. My 03D Z11 is a "6" -

Thanks Pete,

I only researched the numbers decode section, which stated;

At each plant, the vehicle serial number
started the year at the following number:

    100001 for 1967 models
    300001 for 1968 models
    500001 for 1969 models

Mine was not sold until 5/22/69 and the pop plate seems like the car was ordered for stock.

So per the Cowl tag it was a 4th week of March car, which matches up with the engine assemble date of V0317

Sorry - I forgot to welcome you to the CRG. Recent ownership, or long term ? Small block ?

Took me many years of searching to come up with mine - I looked at complete basket cases and Flintstone cars until I was lucky enough to spot this one in the local Trader's Post in the early 90's. Western car, sold new from Courtesy Chevrolet in Houston (closed). Most dealers only received a few Pacers (some not at all, I'd guess), fairly rare in Middle TN back in the day.

Hi Steve and thanks for the welcome.

This pace car belonged to a friend in the early 70s then he sold it to my brother in 1978.

My brother decided to restore it around 1982, took it apart and started purchasing parts from Chev. to restore it.

After 30 plus years of it setting in pieces he threw in the towel and I became the owner in 2013.

Fortunately it retained most of the important original parts and the rest was my scavenger hunt.

It's 99% finished (if they are ever finished) and only needs a little run in and testing when the weather breaks.

Thanks Rich

There were over 6,000 Chevy dealerships in 1969 so many didn't get-or want-one. A Z11 with minimal equipment had an MSRP over $4,100, a lot of money in those days. The gaudy orange interior wasn't popular and many of them languished on dealer lots well into Fall.

Today, a very desireable car. Back in the day, not so much.

I think it was the same for the yellow interior cars. Mine was on the lot for approx. 9 months.....Joe

Depends on your point of view, I suppose. I only saw one on the street in Nashville and surrounding areas in the early 70's, loved it at first sight, and looked for a decent example for over 20 years to go with my Z until I found mine in '94. I wish I had kept pics of all the candidates that I turned down due to poor condition, or obliterated beyond salvaging, still with unreal price tags. Never regretted the purchase -

Steve

Absolutely on the money. When I saw that orange interior, I thought ugh!. I always thought that is why not that many were sold. I also remember a local Plymouth dealer that had a 70? Superbird sitting on the lot for a couple of years. That rear spoiler was too much for most people.

Cant help but notice how many totally trashed ones come up for sale over the years.  Way too many were left to rot for a long time.
