1st Generation Camaro Outdoor Billboards (1966-1969)
« on: February 05, 2019, 05:09:35 PM »
While looking for vintage Camaro pictures I stumbled across the Duke University Libraries Digital Collections web site.  They have a collection known as the Outdoor Advertising Association of America (OAAA) Archives, 1885-1990s, and out of a total of more than 16,000 images, this collection has over 250 images of Chevrolet outdoor advertising.  I was able to find a few cool photos showing how the first generation Camaro was advertised on outdoor billboards when they were new.  I thought I would add these to the ones I had already found and create this thread.  Enjoy!

Browse the collection here: https://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/oaaaarchives/

I'm not sure that this was a real billboard. After looking at it for a while it looks like a doctored photo????  You be the judge.

Here is an outdoor billboard ad for Lowe Chevrolet in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.  It mentions "1969 Camaro Hugger"

I found the picture at The Revs Institute.  Although they state that the picture was taken at Shelby County International Raceway Jon Mello has correctly pointed out that it was actually taken at Marlboro Motor Raceway in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.  The fact that there was a Lowe Chevrolet in Upper Marlboro, Maryland confirms this location.  The picture was taken at an SCCA event possibly held in November 1968.

Also notice the Camaro parked behind the guard rail on the left side of the picture.

Click on the link and use the magnification tools for a better view of the billboard: https://library.revsinstitute.org/digital/custom/single-image?id=543028&collection=p17257coll1

I just noticed in reviewing these photos that the '67 RS SS billboard from Southern California dealers looks almost exactly like my current '67 RS SS.  The color is Tahoe Turquoise.  The one in the photo seems to be a BB while mine has the 350.  I have drum brakes with 5 spoke mag style wheel covers instead of the Rally wheels.  Mine has white stripe tires which I understand were available as a no cost option.   Otherwise exactly the same color with black stripes and black vinyl top.

A billboard featuring the recently introduced 1967 Camaro RS/SS 350 appeared on the grounds of Riverside International Raceway in Riverside, California during the Los Angeles Times Grand Prix held on October 30, 1966.  This was the fifth of six races in the first season of the Sports Car Club of America's (SCCA) Canadian American Challenge Cup (Can-Am).  John Surtees won the race in his Lola Chevrolet T70 Mk 2.

It appears to be the same image of a Butternut Yellow 1967 Camaro RS/SS 350 with a red background used in the billboards in the previous post.

Photo 1: Click on the link and use the magnification tools to get a better look at the billboard here: https://library.revsinstitute.org/digital/custom/single-image?id=172962&collection=p17257coll1

You can also see the Camaro RS/SS billboard just above the Chaparral in the 3rd and 4th photos.  It came from worthpoint.com
