Kenny Ross Special Paint cars
« on: December 14, 2018, 06:55:34 AM »
I know this post is a couple months old but I had to reply. I have a mustard yellow special paint 69 Camaro sold new at Kenny Ross. It's an RS with black deluxe interior and a 4 speed. The car does not have it's original motor but was at the very least an L78 car. X22 with all the solid lifter signs, cowl hood, no spoilers. Extremely solid car with amazing original interior.Salesman that sold it new was  John Baker, his sticker is still on the bottom of the steering column (ncrs also shows Kenny Ross). Build dateis VERY close to other late (Sept) copos. I know the OP hasn't been on in a few months but I thought it was worth a shot to leave this up in case he gets back on or someone else knows the car. Would love to hear anything. It's a pretty interesting car with a good amount of options. Thanks

RS. Black deluxe. Console. Tach and gauge car. Remote mirror. Am radio with rear speaker option. Console 8 track. Power steering. No spoilers. Cowl hood. All original metal except drivers fendee which is old nos (still has sticker). I believe the paint would be code 519 Chevy truck dark yellow. One repaint, about to be 2. Does not have original rear (I think) not BE. I  thought it was a L78 and not copo because I've never seen a X22 copo. But I'm not positive. It's very close in vin to a few other copos and theres no holes in the original passenger fender for SS emblems plus all the other solid lifter signs. Either way it's a keeper.  I read in an old post that a guy was able to chase records on his car sold at Kenny Ross as they saved them and are still in business, so I'm going to give it a try. I read that Kenny Ross said he ordered alot of special paint, high horse cars as he was trying to attract the younger buyers and that 25 pct of his new car sales were performance cars.

So the engine and axle are not original but the interior is in excellent condition? What about the transmission, original? M20, M21, M22?

Sending you a pm.

Sorry to hijack the thread but I wanted to share info about my car.  I have a somewhat mustard yellow special paint 69 Camaro sold new at Kenny Ross. I'm not sure what color it was but the closest I could find was Placer Gold. It's an SS/RS L78 with black deluxe interior and a 4 speed. I'm the second owner and have had it since 1973. The car does not have it's original motor, trans or rearend. Build date is 04L. I  would love to hear about any Kenny Ross special paint camaros from around this timeframe.

Ron, what happened to the engine/trans/rear and how do you know it was a L78? Did you do a NCRS report and what is your info on the trim tag. Sounds like a neat color!

Ron,  Did your car have hockey stripes when new?  Also,  Kenny Ross is still in business.  I called about records and the person I spoke to didn't know of any but I was reading a post on the yenko site where a guy said he spoke to a few different people at KR and was able to obtain records on his 70 Chevelle.  He said they were all filed and stored in an off site facility.  I even thought of making a day out of it and driving there.  Also I sent you a PM.

I just picked up a Kenny Ross RS/SS 350 4 speed 1968 Camaro. It was special order Omaha Orange with '67 style white noses band. Highly optioned car with black deluxe interior, console /gauge, tinted glass, wood wheel , rear antenna, mag wheel covers, bumper guards, am radio, remote mirror.  It is all numbers matching. Glovebox had warranty book and POP and the Body Broadcast Copy safely tucked away. Car has only 17K miles, but it sat outside and the body need new panels. But the interior is in excellent overall condition. KR sold lots of hi-po cars and special paint was common. I know of an original owner '68 Chevelle SS from KR that is Omaha Orange too.. I have heard of what people called School Bus Yellow 69 Camaro's from KR.

If you can’t figure it out, email the link to me and I will post it.

From the 70s into the 90s the company my dad worked for ordered most of their trucks in that yellow color.

Here is the information from the post mentioned, which was over on yenko.net (fixed some typos and formatting)

I don’t know if this means the custom painting was done at the dealership, special ordered or a combination of both.

The following is from an article from Kenny Ross himself in January 1970, through the Chevrolet Central magazine:

Kenny Ross, from Kenny Ross Chevrolet, is Performance minded, but not a specialist. He has been keeping a close watch on the Youth market for some time. "marketing for all sorts of products has been aimed at the under 25's-and that includes cars."
Even though the Dealership is not located in a Performance area, he believes that getting into the performance market is the way to reach young buyers. Today, close to 25% of their new car business is in peformance cars.
"The kids are looking for identification,........individualty, they're looking for a Car with Flare....speed...color-something different.
For this reason we do a lot of custom painting.
The Kenny Ross Dealership has three specialists on the sales staff, and a separate showroom for High performance parts.
The most Important thing a dealer needs, Ross Believes, is a Service Dept. equipped to handle performance car business. When it comes to ordering, most of the Kids Know as much about the cars as anyone on our staff. But if you don't have good service, you lose the business. This is especially true in make-ready, so we can make an extra special effort preparing performance cars for Delivery".(Outstanding equipment in their service department includes a Dynamometer-not usually found outside specialized speed shops.)

I bought the car in 1973 from the original owner, blown motor, i had the blown L78 short block but scrapped it, (as a 20 yr old, who knew), I wanted a Z28. The original owner kept the trans. and I traded the rearend to another Camaro owner for a 4.56 12 bolt. I knew of the car in our area when it was new, it may have been School Bus Yellow with custom paint from KR, I don't believe it had hockey stripes but it had an American flag painted on the hood. Original owners' brother wrecked it and then had it painted some candy apple pink, it looked like a pickle egg when I got it. My buddy and I painted it in 1975 white with black Z stripes and added some Z emblems. It is still the same to this day.
