Wiring harness question
« on: October 07, 2018, 05:59:01 PM »
I need to replace the under dash harness on
my 68 RS/SS I want and have found a used one .
How many connectors are on the under
dash harness for a 4spd car with console and gauges application,
Versus no console or automatic etc?
Thanks

I have converted both a 68 auto no gauges to gauges, and a 67 4 speed no gauges to gauges,. And all you need is the 68 extension harness that plugs into the factory harness, then you need the gauges harness next. When I bought the gauges harness it came with all the instructions to change the under dash wiring from the dummy lights.  And of course in 68 with the tic toc tach you have to buy the new plastic dash mat wiring for replacing the fuel gauge to a tach.  It cost me about a grand from heart beat city.

Basically the main harness wouldn't have more connections, only the extension harness adds to the gauges option. Bottom harness picture plugs into factory harness, top harness pucture would plug into gauge extension harness that is sold separately. Just need to look up how your car is for the correct harness.

So does this mean main harness “fuse panel harness”
Is the same?
My car has console with gauges and 4spd ,
those harnesses are good , I just want to replace
the main section.
Thanks

You know I've added the gauges to cars and not owned a factory gauges car, in my wiring they all had power wires that plugged into the fuse block, on a factory harness with gauges I would only be guessing.   In the description of buying the harness they state same connections as factory based on factory wiring diagrams.

Thinking about having to change wires to the dash plug I'm gonna say the factory harness is different with gauges than with dummy lights. I was thinking you were adding gauges not the other way around I apologise for not understanding the original question. Based on having to open the fuse block for the amp gauge, and oil light change, I'm gonna say a factory gauges car harness at the fuse block to the dash is different than with dummy lights.

My car had the gauges (not originally) and since my car originally had idiot lights, I bought the conversion harness and put it in.  Upon finally figuring out that the gauges were added , I undid the conversion.  It wasn't that hard to do and there was definitely a difference between the harness under the dash and how it's wired.  I still have the harness and all the instructions.
