69 Z28 battery

Hi. My 69Z28, with DZ302 is hard to start after it has reached operating temp.  Let sit, and cools down, no problem.  Checked timing, and battery.  All good.

Sounds like a starter motor heat soak issue, do you have headers or stock manifolds?

I had an issue with my 66 BB Chevelle like this. I installed a Moroso heat shield over the starter solenoid. Fixed
It is a quick fix and cheaper than replacing the whole starter, if thats what it is.

At least a good place to start. I figure the heat shield would even protect a new starter as well, if you have to go that route.

Could be the starter but you might want to verify your timing marks, ect. If the balancer or timing cover has been replaced your timing might be off. Back off your timing a little and try it. It is simple and free.

My interpretation of his statement is at operating temp, the starter spins the engine normally but it does not fire immediately. A friend had this problem with his new '69 Z/28 and it was frustrating. Took a few trips to the dealer to sort it out.

Does John Z have a FACT sheet like the cooling system design and troubleshooting, if so that will contain a nice set of paths to the cure.

As William stated, I would guess it's cranking fine hot or cold, but would like a better description.

   This likely isn't your issue since you stated it starts fine cold, but one thing I often see missing on a points ignition car is the hot wire that runs from the "R" terminal on the solenoid up to the coil.  This provides a full 12 volts while the ignition is in the crank position.  Otherwise the points are dead while cranking and only light off once the crank position is released.  Sometimes makes starting a car that is still running points hit or miss, and most times requires more cranking than should be necessary to get the engine to fire.

Since it's a hot start problem, taking the starters ability to crank while hot out of the equation, most often it's the quality of the pump gas being used.  The ethanol fuel today is more susceptible to heat soak, especially if you're trying to run a lower octane.   Any part of the fuel system close to heat is at risk.  Some of it can be cured or subdued to some degree with various things you can do, but in some cases it may just be the nature of the beast.
