Ignition Coil Orientation
« on: August 23, 2018, 09:28:00 PM »
Sorry if this is a repeat: I tried searching the forums, and looking at pictures, but can't get a real answer:

Does anyone know the original position of the ignition coil on 67-69s? I have seen quite a few with the positive terminal at about 4 o'clock, pointing towards cylinder number 5. Any input would be appreciated.

That position, or a close position, likely puts the (-) terminal adjacent to the distributor, allowing maximum rotation of the distributor for timing purposes without pulling on the terminal... (just a guess)...  :)

UPC12  11A V8 engine wiring shows the coil & orientation (clocking) can be inferred by the relationship of the forked terminal from the wiring harness representing the positive terminal stud. Concur with Gary's input above.

As most here will tell you you need to purchase a copy of the Factory Assembly Manual for your year as it is a wealth of info. I even think the techie's here might have some kind of link to it (.pdf version)??

My 67, it seems where the factory positive resistance wire sits naturally.

Thanks Jim.   I have the assembly manual, and have viewed that A11 diagram.  It is not explicit as the distributor orientation diagram is.  I believe it is quite vague, roughly showing the positive terminal pointing to the firewall where the master cylinder mounts. It also doesn't correlate with the clocking that I see on very original cars such as a 307 Chevelle that I looked at on the weekend that looked to be untouched. It had it clocked further forward, pointing to cylinder #5. THis fairly original looking 396 car also had it pointing at #5.
