Vinyl top installation
« on: August 21, 2018, 02:54:56 PM »
How was the roof sheet metal prepped at the factory when a vinyl top was to be installed?
Looked for a discussion but didn't see anything. Thank you, Joe

I read through the assm process of body cores & if I'm reading this correctly it would appear the entire body was painted & not allowing anything different for a vinyl top car. It would also appear that the vinyl top was applied directly over the painted surface. Is this correct? Thanks again, Joe

On a non-vinyl top 69 the quarter to roof seam is completely leaded. With a vinyl top, only about 2" from the drip rail is leaded. Remainder is caulk.

I would also have a discussion with the chosen installer, In a manner of speaking; Who cares what the factory did ( "I know I do". I am going to the extent to restore under the carpet to reflect overspray so I get it), What will be acceptable to the installer, do you want the painter to assume what will be acceptable to the top installer. It is always good to communicate with the sub contracted top installer.

just encouraging communication with you & your providers

If restoring an area which is prone to rust/corrosion, I would take extra steps to ensure no future problems of that type, but try to do it in a way that doesn't appear to be different than factory...  ie.   the vinyl top would cover/hide whatever is under it, and I think good paint under the vinyl would help to prevent/delay any corrosion...

The guy I was going to use for the top install wanted it bare metal & I was pretty sure that was wrong. I did the last 2 on the car. I'm pretty sure I can do the next one. It's been too long since I've seen the original roof. The information provide here will help me to get the top back on & it will probably be the last one as today, this won't be a daily driver as it was earlier in it's life.
The painter & I have had several conversation on overspray, what gets cover & what doesn't, what get's stripped. Absolutely no blasting inside the body. What gets a hard line & what doesn't. It gets involved if you want to do it correctly....Joe
