CAMEL HUMP HEADS- INSTALL 2.02/1.60 VALVES?
« on: July 25, 2018, 02:04:37 PM »
I have a set of 1965- 3782461 Camel Hump Heads with 1.94/1.50 valves, that were on my 68 Camaro when I purchased it. The Chevrolet By The Numbers book, discloses that these heads could have either 1.94/1.50 or 2.02/1.60 valves installed. So, it appears that I could have the larger valves installed in these heads because the casting is exactly the same, including the intake and exhaust runners. Can any expert confirm this? Thank you.

The heads themselves are the same, but the machine work was different between the 1.94's and the 2.02's. The combustion chambers on the 2.02 intake valves were cut out a little more to unshroud the chamber for more flow (and make room for the larger valves). And if you take a set of 1.94 heads and install 2.02's without adding that additional cut, they'll actually flow LESS than the 1.94's!

A few pictures survive in THIS THREAD and see below for the cut that unshrouds the chamber (arrow).

To summarize : yes, you can install larger valves. And this may be a viable upgrade if the valves are sunk in the head from wear. To do this just for sake of doing, I would not advise. This “upgrade”does not help street performance and may even hurt low and midrange performance, but not to any real detriment. It’s a Chevy! It will run good regardless. If you want a hot runner, but newer aftermarket heads.

IF you look at the head and the "meat" between the two intake valves is the same as between the two exhaust valves then the head will need to be fly cut in order to unshroud the valves.
