Real L89 SS
« on: June 27, 2018, 04:51:16 PM »
Is this car the real deal, or is it a restamp machine of deception? My friend found this on eBay and is intrigued. I am, of course, skeptical. Having just a couple letters with NO other documentation would make me nervous. Date Base Car??... Danny

Reproduction window sticker and in my opinion, the engine pad, transmission and rear axle stamps aren't factory original (the fonts aren't consistent with what I have in the database for that time period at LA). However, I would bow to Kurt (who's on vacation for a few weeks), as he has a lot more examples than I have.

And no, there shouldn't be a PTB stamp on a Van Nuys built Camaro!

For future reference, the VIN is 124378L338461

Why does that V on axle code look like its been ground off, welded, smoothed, and stamped with the V on it? Hmmm.

Hi everyone, that car is not real ! First the car has ARP head bolts. The valve covers are completely wrong for the car. Just look at the drivers side cover as it is hitting the wiper motor. I own a true L78  car and the stand for the wire holder is forward more and is a completely different shape. There are no engine life brackets on the motor. The numbers on the stamp are completely wrong. If that was a real car that would be a cheap price. If you look at how the alternator is mounted on the top bolt is wrong too. The bracket should be behind the top bolt. Way to many things wrong !

I agree with Ed.  I have several cars around this date and nothing lines up.  I have issues with everything stamped.

EDIT:

Since you have a L78 would you care to send me the info so I can add it to my list?

Ok I sent an email to you. See if that works. Your pic file size might be too large so try sending pic individually if over 5 mb.

Thumbs down on the car originally posted about in this thread. It’s not real in my opinion. Yes lots of things wrong.

Although not original, I would consider the ARP bolts an upgrade. :)

I called the owner and spoke to for about a hour. He seems like a real nice gentleman. He was under the impression that the motor was never apart so I mentioned the head bolts and valve covers and he just said OH !!

I looked at this car, * I think it was at the Chevy Connection Show room in Portland Ore. (On Stark Ave) a bunch of years ago.

Neat "Hot Rod" but  think this one has been thru the ringer- Built & passed along like a (SPECIAL) COPPER penny.

The avidavit(s) bear NO weight in my mind given the Builder and lack of collective supportive evidense.

Do you see something missing on the carb ? Nice original stamp ha ! I think mickey mouse did that 1 . Wrong shifter ,bell housing all painted. I wouldn't pay 20k. I asked him to get a pic of the oil filter because I want to see the oil pressure line to see if it is at least a 4 bolt main !  Nice original booster too !!!
