Request 67 L35 engine bay photos
« on: May 24, 2018, 06:48:50 PM »
Does anyone have (or point me in the direction) of either a 67 L35 396 survivor car or accurately restored L35 engine bay?

I checked the original car threads to no luck.

Thank you.

Without would be best but honestly one with A.I.R is fine too.

Gee Brent, you are reading my mind. I finally started working on mine and have a lot of confused thoughts. Did all 396's in '67 have chrome valve covers?? I found the dip stick tube is black last night which solved one mystery. Been gathering parts to put the BB back in mine for about 10 years. Where did I put the water pump and carb?  They are both rebuilt, ready to install and I can't find them.

That is where my confusion came from too. Google images gives you a smorgasbord of photos. Figured the guys here would know best!

I didn't forget.....I plan on taking shots from all three sides as well as certain closeups and will post later today. Yes, as far as I know all '67's had chrome valve covers ( referred to as bright engine trim in the sales literature) but not all had chrome air cleaner lids. MY two 67's (04B & 05B) have the black lids.

Great information Mike thank you!

I have seen some with the black cover just figuring out the method to the madness and remove these tacky black aftermarket valve covers and air cleaner.

I THOUGHT they all had chrome covers but was hoping. I don't like them and may not use them even though I have a pair that seem correct. I saw a 325 at Carlisle years ago with a closed element black air cleaner, never saw another. My car was changed to a SBC with the forth owner in around '74. I have asked all the owners I know but no one has pictures of it  and we are ALL old and have CRS.

Thanks, I remember that thread. I have seen the black top open filter like Mike S shows. The  closed element car I remember as being yellow and was in the building where they were judging survivors, this would have been before the Camaro show moved to Maryland. The closed filter was not very good looking as I remember. Anyway, I guess my car should have chrome covers and a black lid open filter by the date. Thanks for all the help. More pictures may help more. I realize the 325's don't get the press that 375's do.

Do we have an answer on L35 valve covers chrome vs orange? I really want to get rid of these tacky painted black aftermarket units and at least make it look better.

I guess it is a moot point since the car is a 4P 350 car. Previous owner started to clone it to a BB car; L35 396 67 block black tail pan, regular SS grille badge etc. but engine bay has a Holley air cleaner and rattle can black valve covers so I want it to look more original.  It is a 3D car which puts it around the time of the change from chrome to black air cleaner.

Also if known what would a 67 L35 equipped car have for fender badges?

Mike S, or someone else,  Can you tell me the length of the dip stick on a 325hp? I bought a new one , maybe 10 years ago, and now trying to use it it seems to long. Mine is 24 1/4 from the seal to the tip. It does have a part number on it, last four numbers are 1088.

Since its a non numbers matching car and not even a big block car, personally I would not try to clone it exactly toward an original SS 396 car. But that is just me. Drive it and enjoy it. Change the things you want to make it look better in your eyes, but don't try to make it out for something it isn't.  Just my opinion.

That is basically what I am doing. I am not a big fan of the Holley air cleaner look nor the black valve covers.
