Guessing it was bought for a lot less than $35k.

Possible, but I doubt it based on what Jano reported. (Under 40 vs under 30)

I am thinking the buyer realized there was a lot of work to be done to get it restored, or maybe even road worthy.

 My guess it went something like this" gonna take at least 75k to get this car right, and the original engine is gone, really devalues these. But I'm really into these Z's, and gonna do it right, will even give you and your aunt a ride when it's done😈"
I'm thinking lowballed, this area either your doing ok, or broke. Probably jumped on a little over 20.

That would be surprising to me since they had that guru with the crutches climbing all around it. You would think he would have pointed them in the right direction?
