1111499 Distributor Known Date Codes And Help
« on: May 01, 2018, 12:02:50 AM »
Hey everyone,

I’m trying to track down one of the 1111499 distributors for our restoration. I’ve been warned about restamps and people faking them. Also have been told that the last real date known for them to have been produced was supposedly April 28th, 1969. Is there any place to find out what others dates these were known to be made? The build is for a July assembled car with the engine being built mid June. Is the only date that would be date accurate be April 28th? Seems they are like hens teeth and I’m not having much luck.

Thanks for any and all help.

Is it wrong to think that there should ultimately be more of that date code than any other since it seems like a production/service buildout? Most I’ve found are all 1968 coded. That being said eBay has been about my only resource. I’ve stumbled upon a few website selling original parts but none with anything that would be of any help if that’s the only date I should be looking for. I’ve seen an April 10th, 1969 and a March 11th, 1969 dates before but so far the only date I’ve been seen confirmed from everything is the 28th of April.

Sorry for the newb questions. Trying to drink up the knowledge on this stuff.

The distributor was added at the vehicle assembly plant. The engine date is not a factor. 'Correct' component date codes were messed up because Chevy likely had left-over 499 inventory [and others] at other plants shipped to Norwood for the extended 1969 Camaro production run. 1969 Camaro production ended at Norwood the first week of November, 1969.

The book Camaro By The Numbers lists the 499 distributor as being used on the 396 and the 427 for both the Chevelle and Camaro. That’s half the reason I am somewhat surprised they are as hard to find as they are if it’s teue about being used on the 396.

The 1111499 distributor was used in automatic L34 350 hp 396 [est prod 400] all L78s [3,823 prod] all L72 427s [997 prod].

That's 5,220 [gross]; some early production '69 L78s used '68 1111170 distributors.

And that is just  Camaro production numbers. Chevelle assembly lines built a lot more L78 cars (over 9,000) in 69,  than Camaro. L34 autos, same way, a lot more Chevelles

That's incorrect. The distributor was part of the engine assembly as shipped.

Does this check out to everyone. I’m most leary of purchasing a distributor with how many fakes and restamps exist, so does this date check out (April 10th 1969) as a known date and does everything else look correct for it being original? The only other concern would be with this being too early for a mid June built motor?

The date is not known original date I have seen before. The seller that is selling this distributor is well known for restamped engine parts. The dates I know are original with the 1969 stamp dates are......
<removed. That info is too valuable to the restampers, IMO.  Kurt>

Wow, thanks for leading me to that. As I said that is the main reason why I’m leary of buying one of these distributors. The money involved in this stuff just makes it way to easy and enticing for this sort of thing.

So it sounds like (March  / April ) are the two dates I need to be looking for. Search continues lol.

Should look like this one. Un-restored original April 28th, this is the font and appearance you need to look for. I added White Out to the stampings for contrast, but it has not been blasted or modified, only cleaned of gook. You can usually spot a restamped or altered housing by looking at the step for the cap (about .020 wide or better); the appearance of the feed lines of a cutting tool where the housing was trued up in a turning operation or a lathe. Blasted housings or extremely smooth surfaces are a dead giveaway something has gone on -
