68 Camaro TH400 with console shifter cable
« on: April 14, 2018, 01:39:08 AM »
Looking at buying a GM NOS cable 3956765 which is apparently correct for my application. The issue I have is that the grommet has 3 holes around the perimeter which I guess is for screwing it to the floor. Is this right as the assembly manual doesn't mention it being screwed to the floor?

I don't believe the original seal was screwed into the floor - my cable on my Z11 small block looks just like this, apparently replaced at some point, and there are no holes in the tunnel around the seal where an original would have been mounted. I would like to see someone's original cable in place to see what I need to replace it with myself -

Regards,

Here are a couple of pictures of my '68 BB TH400 "born with" shifter cable. Note that the grommet seals against the floor with three tabs.

I have NOS cables that have the same 3 screw boot. Some that I bought in 1981. I just retained the original boot when I needed to use the cable. The boot that's on the original cable look like the one for the ducted hood. Are they the same piece?....Joe

68 cable # in assembly book show's 3932732 in 69 parts book shows 3931469. 69 show shows 3956765 in both books. Later parts shows 68#  changed to 69 Camaro # 3956765. Grommet # is 3922580 it also different # than cowl hood grommet. Hope this helps.

I've found this one that Ecklers sells:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Camaro-Floor-Shifter-Cable-Assembly-With-Powerglide-TH350Or-TH400-33-186177-1/183135870051?fits=Year%3A1968%7CModel%3ACamaro&hash=item2aa3bf9c63:g:eFEAAOSwfaBar8M1&vxp=mtr

Grommet looks pretty close to the one in the photos posted by Bob. Has anybody bought one of these cables to give us some feedback on the quality as they're not cheap. Ecklers have a note below the description which may explain the situation with the change in grommet style:

"This cable fits all Camaros from 1968-1972 and this style of grommet was on the cable from the factory. This cable was replaced in 1973 with the same style cable with a triangular shaped grommet which screwed to the floor with three screws. If the cable broke in your Camaro, it was replaced with this later style cable and is not correct for 1968-1972"

I would use the gm 3956765 work for a gm for 32 years never had a problem with this cable just change grommet. Have a guy that restores Camaro's and he only uses gm cable tried aftermarket and was not happy with them!
