Unrestored Z/10 anyone?
« on: March 23, 2018, 04:12:02 AM »
Saw this ebay ad for a unrestored Z/10 with a black vinyl top. Thought it was pretty cool

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1969-Chevrolet-Camaro-pace-car/123030888464?hash=item1ca5366010:g:bhAAAOSw~l5ar~OB&vxp=mtr

Sad story of why he is selling it, but says he is the second owner.

At 22k so far, no reserve. Fun to watch these unrestored cars. :)

Good candidate. Car is in Tucson, seller states it was sold new in Phoenix - ought to be a nice, dry body. Surprised at the vinyl top - usually didn't last long in this area, so garage statement may be accurate.

I've noticed (obviously) Southwest Zone cars were often air conditioned, even as convertibles. Looks like a lot of A/C equipment is left on this one, minus the compressor (which may still be around - read the description).

always concerns me when seller has no feedback. Sometimes they have several cars listed like a dealer. Seems strange they havent sold anything

Where did you see or find that?   It wasn't included in the ad or photos....??

It just looks that way to me in the pictures, Gary. The driver's "A" pillar looks black and it looks like a tape line below the trim at the rear but it could be the shadows. I'm not really knocking the car or the ad but Steve had mentioned how the tops don't last long in the southwest.

Hard to tell if any vinyl is still on the top, but you can tell the windshield pillars have been painted.

Wow, you learn something new all the time at CRG.  I wasn't aware that you could get a vinyl top of any color, let alone black, on a Z10.  Are there any known Z11s with an original black convertible top?

OK...  I thought there might have been an update to the file.. :)    Yes, I noticed the driver side A pillar at the front had been *primed* it appeared to me, but the vinyl area still appeared to be vinyl to me ..?   I really didn't like the black vinyl top on the white Z10 with orange stripes... first one I've seen like that  but apparently factory per the cowl plate..  I think if it were mine, I'd repaint all white (roof too), but maybe leave the vinyl top trim...?

Just curious... Do you guys think that $22-23K is a fair price for a car like that??
(Personally I wouldn't spend that much on a car that needs that much work, but that's just me).
Obviously the car needs a lot of work, but how much does a Z10 add to the equation?

Well factoring in the Z10 included at least a 350ci, the RS package, the ZL-2 hood, and the identitfying orange stripes, I would think a slight cut above what an SS would go for in similar condition. My guess for this car would be mid 20's

White and black tops - http://www.camaros.org/69pacer.shtml#Z10

I read that 3 times trying to see if there was a reference to a Z10 with a black vinyl top, but didn't see it..   It DID say that several Z10s had vinyl tops (but I'd think MOST of those were white vinyl tops).. Do you have any data on the number with black vinyl tops? (I'd think that combination would NOT be in Chevy's recommended combinations)...

Interesting, I would have thought along the line of Gary's thinking, that black didn't coordinate great with the color scheme.
Do you have a big enough sample to know what percentage of Z/10's came with a vinyl top?

Thank you Kurt...  It's surprising (to me) that there were multiple white w/orange stripe cars with black vinyl tops, whereas I think it would look great with a white vinyl top.....

Cool car for someone but one thing is for sure, the cost to restore normally far outweighs its value. But glad many are doing it as its saving the breed. :)

Wouldn't be to far removed from using t as a driver just the way it is, IMO.
I think you come out ahead if you only had a thousand bucks into all the small stuff to get it going.

I just looked through the pics of the car again.

It will probably be fully restored, BUT here is my take:

It looks close to running. so maybe with most of that thousand bucks, replace the mirrors, antenna, one 350 emblem and the steering wheel. Remove the extra shackles, sticker on the windshield, mud flaps, and find a set of decent rally wheels, and maybe a grill? If you did that this car would be looking pretty good. I think if you methodically got the right parts under the hood for cheap you would be looking good investment wise.

That would be my plan. and then just drive it baby!

To many cars getting torn apart and off the road for to many years. Our time here is short, I am in full on fun mode. I gotta look at cars like this and think what is the quickest most cost effective way to F-U-N?

I could drive a car like this my whole life and never fully restore it, just an item here and an item there. Its the simple pleasures for me I guess

Gary and I probably agree on more, than we disagree .... :)

It may not come across on the CRG, but through back channels we are usually on the same page.

Sometimes Gary has to take me out back and take the belt to me, eventually I come around... ;D
