Jason,

Now you should do the homework to find out how the car lost its engine.  Find out where this guy bought it and do the detective work.  You might find an owner with paperwork, etc.  Good luck.  How cold is it out there now........-15??  The weather in SD is brutal for me this time of year.  Our Clear Lake '07 trip was the coldest for us in all the years we've been traveling there.

snowed 3 inches last night temp supposed to be -18 tonight.   i will call you and let you know the whole story once i get the engine probably a couple week until i get it is in the minneapolis region.

   Do you know what the engine assemble date stamped on the block is yet?  I was just wondering how close it was to your car's build date.

I think it's very close.  Real engines always are.  It's the restamped specials that give us a fit.

Paul,

You hit it right on the money.  About a 33% increase in value on the car.  I might have a dated carb in stock, I just bought an 812 or 813.  I'll have to check.

Jerry -

   You state it increases a cars value about 33% if it has it's original engine.  Assuming I will never find the original chassis to the MO 302 I have, what would make more sense?

1) Find a date correct, original 1968 Z/28 without it's original engine and install the one I have?
   or
2) Since I already have a 1968 Z/28, find a date correct 1968 Chevelle, Nova, El Camino, etc. and build something fun?

I appreciate and value your expert opinion!

you know what happens when we assume!  i also never dreamed of finding the correct engine, not only found it it led me to the original rear axle assembly ect, ect.  maybe because there are so few people in south dakota did this happen, but never say never.  save the engine, or be prepared to pull it out if the correct car arises or you may have to sell it to the man with the car. either way never give up these thing are ment to rest together.

If you have an original 302, that is another idea on how to appraoch a restoration, finding a Z28 without it's original engine.  Doing this will still make for a nice resto package.

A friend of mine has a '68 Z that he's had for years and years, but its without the original motor, actually ANY motor...I'll track down his numbers and see if maybe, just maybe his motor is around here.

Unfortunately, he's one of those guys that will never sell anything, and if a motor costs $2000, but will make the value of his car go up $20,000, he sees that as losing $2,000 out of pocket.  Very frustrating to see....

I'll ask him what the numbers on his car are.  Boy that would be crazy if your motor and his car matched.  I just cannot tell you how frustrating it is to listen to, and watch this guy.

When the first of the ZZ-series crate motors came out at GM (I have no idea when....mabye 80's), he bought a brandy spankin' new "ZZZ" 9.8:1 crate engine.  It is still sitting in his garage, wrapped up in the crate and plastic it came in.  Never touched.  He has a '68 Z, '69 6-banger, '70 Z, all kinds of awesome body parts and what not, and is going to give it all to his son.

The kid will probably get a drug problem and sell it all off for a grand.....

arrrrgh....the frustration.  The damn '68 sits under a mile from me, right now.

Hey Paul,,,,,,,Ok Ok Ok....the more I follow this place the more I am loving it...yes hang on to the motor...I was wrong..I was thinking more like the 70's...and I need to get with the times...I have a 70 Cam. SS 350 Motor sitting in my garage that I am waiting for a right 70 Camaro to put in...so hang on..and good luck...scott
