1967 RS/SS 396 - L35 M40 project
« on: January 27, 2018, 09:16:20 PM »
Some of you may have seen this car on CL.  It was posted for numerous cities.

A good friend sent me the listing, and after being encourage by another friend - my son and I had a discussion.  I have been looking for another car. We had downsized, getting rid of three other ongoing or future project cars in order to get one a little more special.  This one seems to fit the bill.  :)

Original color is Tahoe Turquoise and it will go back to that color.  Did not have time to get all the numbers, but will tell you what I know and update more in the future.  When we picked it up, we had a 7 hour drive to get it into safe storage at an alternate location before a blizzard hit. So I checked a few things and was satisfied enough to make the deal at that point.

Axle is original to the car, BJ coded 3.07 open 12 bolt.  Currently does have a posi carrier, but not sure on ratio.  The car has a TH400, possibly original to the car.  Engine block is a 406 casting number, possibly original to the car but pad was decked.  Again - will check all the numbers at some point in the near future.  It has been off the road since the late 90s.  One owner 1980 to 2001, previous owner to me had it from 2001 to Jan 2018 (just one week ago).

The engine was rebuilt 20 plus years ago and has less than 50 miles on it since being completely redone. Non-original rectangle port heads and low rise GM aluminum LS6 type intake.  Original disc brakes, console car, black deluxe interior.

This car needs some major love (floor work, rockers, frame rails) but it is well worth saving. Don't make any crude comments, I know it is rough.

Here is a pic from the ad.  And a few more pics after very initial cleaning of some of the interior items (drivers seat is still in the car).  Will plan to keep/preserve and restore as much of the original interior as possible. The upper part of the door panels are in decent shape but the lowers (carpet pieces) will need to be replaced. Seats will need a bit more cleaning and conditioning.

This is a car that my dad, my son, and my grandson will work on together and it will end up being my son's car.  :)  Plan is that it will take several years to complete, but hopefully can be driven by the end of the summer.

Excellent, You are going to have a blast; esp like that special (In My Mind) color.

Can not wait to watch this come together over time, I get it, good things take the same.

Congrats

Hi Bryon,

I'm looking forward to seeing another 67 L35/TH400, BJ rear Camaro especially with Tahoe Turquoise color.
Sounds exactly like my coupe  ;)
Is it a LOS or NOR car? Mine is still together and original so if you need any pictures for reference, just let me know.

Mike it’s a Norwood car, 07A.

It was really dirty inside. I just couldn’t force myself to post many pics until it gets cleaned up better.

We think most of the main exterior body can be carefully patched. Passenger side fender not original to the car but it’s from another SS. All of the trim was taken off the car prior to 2003, maybe a lot earlier but it’s probably 95 percent complete. Dash is all there.

We are going to see what we can do with the hood. Underside has some rust but we are going to try to stabilize that and then get it sealed up. I think I can get another original if this one is too far gone.

Give me a bit and I will try to post a pic of the engine compartment.  I have one on my phone but will have to reduce the size to get it to post. Realize we did ZERO cleaning so far, other than the seats and door panels. It’s as found.

I see it does not have power brakes. Didn't you say it has discs up front?

Yep. :)

Supposed to have a 1970 LS6 top end on it.

I should have the brackets to put alternator back where it belongs.

Manual disc brakes - J52.

If you replace the brake lines, be forewarned. I'm converting a 67 to manual disc and Inline Tube and Right Stuff got the crossover line on the subframe wrong. Right Stuff was wrong twice. Set up an account with Inline and they guaranteed theirs would fit which was not the case. It was not even close. The original drum line is correct. All their other lines were fine. Right Stuff also shipped the wrong front section for two piece rear line. Parts are inventoried wrong and mislabeled.

Wow, thanks Scott.  Good to know.

Just did a very preliminary look, but the front lines seemed ok.

That is a great color, and with the black deluxe interior will look quite luxurious in my opinion.

Great project and thanks for sharing.
