1967 Muncie speedo cable hole question

I am wondering if someone can clear this up for me.  In 1967 if the car did not come with a Muncie transmission, would the 1" hole in the firewall at the transmission tunnel not be drilled by the factory ?  refer to picture

The reason why I am asking is that I have a 2LG 4P convertible dismantled to the bones and am trying to convince myself that it was a true RS/SS. It is missing the nose and the original running gear.  The muncie speedo cable hole was covered with a piece of metal riveted to the firewall, but the speedo cable was routed to the right of the column and there are holes for the speedo cable clamps at the center of the firewall (next the Muncie hole) and on the right side of  the transmission tunnel. I am thinking these holes would only be dimples if the car was an L30/M20 with a 327. I did read the L30/M20 article, but it wasn't clear about the holes.

Chris, I'm confused by your statement "The muncie speedo cable hole was covered with a piece of metal riveted to the firewall". If your car has the Muncie hole but covered up, then it came with a Muncie.

Allow me to clarify.  In the pictures in my post above there is a side by side comparison of a 1967 firewall with the Muncie speedo cable hole (left drilled) and another 1967 firewall with the Muncie speedo cable hole NOT drilled (right). I pulled these pictures from the web. I know they are 67 pictures since the wiper motor opening is the 67 only style (big circle, no inset ribs)

Attached to this post is a picture of my firewall.  In the picture of my firewall there is a patch riveted over the Muncie hole and the holes for the cable retainers are present, which I assume wouldn't be drilled if the car did not come with a Muncie.

It is my understanding the only way I can prove that my car came with a 350 was the evidence of a Muncie speedo cable routing. Otherwise it came with a 327. So, are the holes that I have circled in the picture only drilled when a 350 is installed ?

Chris, get that patch off there and let's see what you have under it! If it's a nice round hole and doesn't look to be home made (and yes, you CAN tell), then your car came with the Muncie. Take a few high resolution pictures from the outside AND the inside of the car and post them here.

Also, post a picture of the trim tag. What's your VIN? That might help determine what you have.

This is the best I can do as far as pictures.  The car had been dismantled and the firewall had been sandblasted with the patches removed and allowed to rust before I got my hands on it. The hole was damaged, but the edges are clean like they were done at the factory and not by some guy with a hole saw. The firewall has been butchered a lot, since the car spent most of its life as a drag car.

The VIN is 124677N237440, which tells me its a Norwood built car with a better chance of it being an SS with the 4P code on the trim tag.

"Has correct date coded (but non original or numbers matching) L-48 350 (295 hp) and M-20 Muncie 4-speed for correct restoration."

From that I gather the original transmission was not with the car at time of purchase.

And I am not 100 percent convinced that is an original Muncie firewall hole. It might be fine, I just can’t say with complete certainty that it is.

Chris, so the original axle / rear end is missing from the car?

Can you post a pic of the passenger side of the floorboard area? Is there evidence of a radius rod mount?

Sorry for the delay in my responses.  I usually only hit the forums on work days.

All of the original drivetrain is gone. It was all pulled in the early 70's when the car was converted for drag racing. The car came with a properly date coded 657 block (dated D207),  the correct 1182 350 crank, the correct 291 heads (dated F77) and the correct 803 intake (dated F77). I am missing the 4-spd trans and the original rear end. The rear end I do have does not have a provision for the radius rod. However, the car still has the original radius rod mount welded to the floor (one stud is missing). I can take a better picture later if needed. I just had the car sandblasted and  the radius rod mount looks to be factory installed. 

Was the radius rod mount only installed on SS350's and Z28s?

No, the radius rod was installed on all SS cars, and starting early in 1967, on the L30/M20.
