Help! Engine pad numbers
« on: September 01, 2017, 04:20:57 PM »
Can someone please tell me what this engine is. The numbers on the left of the pad is 18U143390. On the right of the pad is T1229HM. The casting number is 3914660.

The reason I'm asking is the engine is from a guy that used to own my 68 camaro.  But he has had several muscle cats over the years. But what is peculiar to me is that my VIN is 339015. Everything I've looked up says this engine is for a 68 camaro but noNE of the examples have a "14" afterm the place of manufacture which is the " U "

Thanks in advance!

18U143390 is the partial VIN of the car it came out of. In this case it's a 1968 full size car built at the Lordstown, Ohio plant. T1229HM is the engine suffix code and this shows the engine was assembled at the Tonawanda, NY engine plant on December 29th, 1967. HM is the engine code, which is a 327/250 with a Turbo 400 and a 4bbl carb.

Nope. A full size car like an Impala, Caprice, Biscayne, etc...

Well that answers my question. Thank you! On a different note, where did you get this information? Is there a chart or anything that I could look at for future references?

"Chevrolet by the Numbers" series by Alan Colvin. Great reference material.

Ed, How would a 250hp 327 come with a turbo 400?
69 Z28 RS Scuncio Hi Performance
69 SS L78

You got me. But even the full size 307/200 had a Turbo 400 application in 1968*. (DS and DK suffix codes) And both had Powerglide applications as well (DR and DH for the 307/200 and HJ for the 327/250).

*except 4 door and sport sedan (see attached power team chart from the 1968 Chevrolet Car Selector catalog)
