Original 69 L34/L35 Oil Pressure Fitting
« on: August 22, 2017, 04:13:10 PM »
I'd like to hear from guys that have original, born with L34 (350hp) and/or L35(325hp) 69 SS396 Camaros with U17 console gauges. 1969 only as I believe this is a 69 only set up.
I'm going to post up the info I've confirmed, but I'd like to see pictures of original fittings on the block above the oil filter. Please, no L78 pics. They're different.

AIM U17 A3 parts 5 (444052) & 6 (444030)

The first picture is of what I believe originals look like. That's what I'm trying to get confirmation on because there is some conflicting info out there.

This picture is of an L78 fitting that I see all the time and is often confused for what I'm looking for.

Finally, this last one I've seen called a 69 L34/L35 oil fitting, but I don't think it is. HBC claims it's the replacement for 444052.

Dave,

I went down this path on my '68 L35 a couple of years ago and never did get to the bottom of what's correct.

Here is the thread I started which may help you.

BTW....I believe you are correct in that what HBC calls correct for this application really isn't but lack of confirmation of what really is correct has forced me to use this fitting.

Thanks Bob. It looks like Joe was able to answer for my 69. The AIM doesn't differentiate between 68 & 69, so I'd reason to bet yours would be the same. I attached pictures of one I have below.

This is my oil line. 1969 L35 w/factory gauges...Joe
Thanks Joe! So yours is confirmed original correct? I have an original one just like that, but all this time I've been searching for one with the extra bushing like the AIM calls out. Obviously the AIM is far from perfect, so I guess this is one of those occasions. Thanks again! BTW, happy birthday to your 69 next week. My 69's bday was yesterday.

I had the rest of my original oil line. This was the part I needed and luckily I had found one.

Joe's pic so I have them all together and one I have from someone that said it was their original on a 67 L35. EDIT: HA! I read your thread and I just noticed that I must have saved this pic from your thread (Bob's Camarocards). Apparently this pic belongs to MikeS. Thanks again guys!

I've been real anal about this car over the years trying not to lose any of it's original parts that I know to be correct. This car still has it's original exhaust system except muffler & all the smog system. Glad to help...Joe

Dave,

Like you, I've been searching for the elusive bushing called out in the AIM for a long time. Guess we can now confirm that for what ever reason, it was never used. Hopefully we can put this one to bed once and for all.

Unless someone can prove otherwise, I'm considering it a done deal.

So I'm curious. Why is the L78 different? Is it the heads?

My guess is that it's because of the 4 bolt main block and the L78. The fitting is a little more heavy duty by the looks of it. The heads shouldn't have anything to do with it. The fitting is just above the oil filter in the block. It's a good question that I'd love to have a good answer for.

4 bolt main and 2 bolt oil fitting difference.

OK, makes sense now. I'm only familiar with small blocks, so it kinda looked like the heads in the pic I saw. Don't know if it's true, but somewhere I read/heard the 4 bolt big block was drilled and tapped differently to allow for dry sump oiling system?
