Fuel Pump Plate finish
« on: July 14, 2017, 03:38:55 PM »
Looking for pics or information from original cars. If you aren't at least 99 percent sure it's original, then don't post.

Looking for the following...

1. Finish on the metal. Painted? If so what color?
2. Production year and month.
3. Vehicle Assembly plant.

Thanks!

OK sounds good. Just a reminder to stay on topic though and keep it to just what has been seen on original cars. No judging discussion - or that will be removed. Thanks in advance!

Thanks Charley. Is that from a 69, or which year?

This picture is from a Baltimore built 11A 68 chevelle with 5K miles and untouched. I will look for more pics, but what I've seen are primarily bare metal and perhaps a few that appear black. From what I recall the engines were not fired with gasoline at either Tonawanda or Flint, and in fact the plate and fuel pump were not installed, which is why the plate is not orange. The plate and pump were installed on the Chevrolet side of the Norwood plant in the engine dress area.

Bryon, when restoring our 68Z I had two fuel pump plates, one off of a 67 HE (327-300HP) engine and one off our 01B 68 Z28 MO engine. One had no paint and other 100% black paint coverage as in dip painted. Problem was I was not sure which one came off what but both motors were stock unmolested. Will work to take pictures but Skip’s 68 Z/28 07D NOR survivor has black fuel pump plate. His 69 Z/28 late 09D NOR survivor has fuel pump plate with no paint (natural).

The closest thing I have of your old car Danny is this one and cannot really tell if natural or black. Danny's was a 68 05E.

Thanks everyone. Please keep the pics and good information coming.

And yes, from John Z's Flint V-8 Plant Engine Manufacturing technical article, during the hot-test, "a natural gas adapter elbow was attached to the carburetor pad".

The fuel pump plate was not installed at the engine assembly plant, since the fuel pump was not needed for the hot test.

So when the engine was hot tested at Flint, there was just an opening where the fuel pump block plate would mount? If so, would there be some oil leakage from the opening?

Chick,
I sent you a bunch of both sides of the plate a while back. I don't know if I still have them, I'll have to take a look when I get home. In Pacific Grove for 2 or 3 more days. I lost my Microsoft picture manager, and any pictures I post here now end up being baby size. Can't see them well. I had that picture manager down to a science. Gonna have to post another way.
