Alternator identification - 68 SS 350 AC
« on: July 05, 2017, 01:30:42 PM »
Hey guys,

I am in search of an alternator that would be correct for a 1968 SS 350 with AC.  my earlier notes show one of these listed
1100794
1100796
1100814

What would be the correct alternator for this application?

I was waiting until my replacement alt went bad to replace it and it did this weekend. If I can find a case I can always rebuild it but would like to put the correct one in to start with this time.

Ant help is appreciated.

Thank You,
John

John, the 1100796 would be the correct alternator for your 68 V8 with A/C.

FWIW, it's found in the 68 AIM under UPC C60, Sheet C9.  Not real obvious when you look at the C60 Contents page

thank you again,

For clarification, In reading other posts about alternators.

'Jason Scott's book lists the 1100817 as: 61 Amp - 68 w/: a/c. AIR or PS

Confusing.
So if the Car was V-8 or 6 cylinder with Air Conditioning AND had either A.I.R. or Power Steering or both,
it got the "817"?'

Is the correct alternator still 1100796 if it is
a 68, SS 350 with Ac and power steering?

I did not specify that earlier. Sorry.

Cheers,
john

Jason Scott's book should be taken lightly. It was written 20 years ago and a lot has been discovered since then.

The 1100817 was only used on 6 cylinder cars with A/C as shown in the AIM, UPC C60, Sheet C8, Item number 2.

And yes, you still need the 1100796.

Thank you for the clarification. Apologies for so many questions. The post was from 2009. Thanks.

In your experience, how close should the Date stamp on the alt be to the build date of the vehicle. How much variance has been observed?

thank You,

Alternators are typically dated just a few days to several weeks before the car assembly date.

Resurrecting this 6 year old post that I didn't see. Turns out my L6 with ac needs p/s to get the 1100817, as listed in the AIM, but the V8 gets 1100796 regardless of p/s or not.  At least it's cleaned up and found a new home with Oregonjam. Alas my search continues,  so if anyone comes across an 817 or knows someone......
