1967 Camaro - Engine/Transmission/Cowl Plate HELP!
« on: June 15, 2017, 07:25:53 PM »
First time poster, and could use some help from those with a lot more knowledge, as my digging has only lead to more questions as to what we have sitting in my garage right now.

Working to help a friend restore a 1967 Camaro, and we are not finding much on the block and transmission in the car, can anyone help elaborate if any of this is original to it? From what we have heard it has an experimental Corvette block in it and what appears to be a TH350 transmission. Below is the cowl plate info and the information I could get off the transmission, and the numbers we could get off the engine block.

Car's location since 1993: Alaska
No idea where it was before that. My friend bought it off a lady who's son died while restoring it, and it has been sitting since then (which If I remember right it was in 1993)

1967 Camaro
VIN Number: 124377L105578

Transmission Number: B6K03D

1.B =Cleveland TH350
2.6? = 1966?
3.K = July
4/5. Date =03
6. D = Day shift

Has a 10 bolt rear axle

Cowl Plate:
      10A                         C180
ST  67-12437  LOS  3252   BODY
TR  717-Z                 D-D   PAINT
       2M

Engine
Casting Number: 395912
Front Pad stamp-passenger side: CE4N23648 and SO118XCB

Notes: Might be a 62-67 small journal block, 327

S=Saginaw engine plant?
0118 = January 18th
XCB = Replacement engine?

CE4N23648
CE=Factory warrantee replacement engine
4? = Might be a 4? Unknown
N = Flint Michigan V8 Replacement plant
23648 = Service unit replacement number

From what I've read up on, the TH350 never came with the 67 Camaro, and the block we have no idea about other than it was a warranty replacement motor part of the warranty program. Anyone have any insight as to what we might have on our hands? Has a Quadrajet carb on the motor now.

Travis, first off, welcome to the group. Glad to have someone from the 49th state on board!

As for the transmission, yes, it's a Turbo 350 assembled on July 3rd, 1976 at the Parma, Ohio plant. (The Turbo 350 didn't make its debut until the late 1968 model year, so it's from 1976).

The engine is a bit of a mystery though. The CE does indeed indicate a warranty replacement engine, and the 4 indicates it was assembled in 1974. (0118 would be January 18th as you speculated) The XCB is the question. I don't have any info on that particular code so it might be a truck, marine, industrial or agricultural application. However, that block casting number (395912) doesn't exist, so are you sure you have it right? Perhaps it's 3959512? That would be a 1960s' and 1970's warranty block.

As for the cowl tag, the only option is 2M which is either the Powerglide transmission or the Turbo 400 (big block only, so your car had the Powerglide). The VIN is a V8 VIN, so the car started life as an LF7 (327/210) or an L30 (327/275). What's the axle code? That might help narrow it down a bit.

Probably didn't get it right, I'll relook on the car itself when I get home from work. Makes sense though that the transmission and motor are mid 70s though. We don't really have any paperwork at all on the car so just trying to narrow down what it was originally and get a little bit more history on what its been doing up to the 90s. Any advice on how to go about that other than trying to track down the 83 year old woman that sold him the car?

Start HERE! For $50 you can find out what dealer originally sold the car.

Friend took a look at it, he thinks it says PW09198, but hes not sure if the last one is actually an 8 (maybe a G). I haven't gotten to look at it personally or see a picture, so based off that it looks like it could be the 67's non-positraction 10 bolt with the 2.73 ratio, unless its not the original axle.

Yes, it's probably PW0919G which would be a 2.73 10 bolt assembled on September 19th at the Detroit Gear and Axle plant (first shift). I would say based on the date it's the original axle, but get the date code on the "pumpkin" and we'll know for sure. Unfortunately, it doesn't help determining if it was an LF7 or an L30 because that ratio was "standard" on both of them!
