Prop shaft dust cover? 1969 Camaro
« on: May 04, 2017, 09:19:46 PM »
Where my drive shaft enters the rear differential is what looks like a dust cover. Recently it has started to spin with the drive shaft making a ringing type noise. How do I stop it?? Does it require a rebuild of the rear end. Any exploded view would be helpful. Would that be the Flange Assembly I see in the NPD catalog pg 151????

Terry, are you referring to the pinion yoke that has a cover type round piece? To fix that properly your going to have to take it off to repair or replace.  Our original off our 68 after I restored it.

That is it! What was holding it in place? How do I fix it? Does it require a disassembly of the differential or rear end? Great picture by the way. Are you suggesting a replacement of the whole yoke assembly or flange assembly? I have no problem dropping the drive shaft but is the yoke assembly removable without taking apart the rear end?

Thanks for the picture and advise.

Yes the yoke assembly is removable with taking the rear end assembly apart.  What you do is drop the driveshaft and then scribe the pinion nut and the pinion to note the location of the nut on the pinion shaft.  Then using an impact gun take off the pinion nut.  The yoke will then come off but it may take a little wiggling to get it free from the pinion splines.  Putting it back together is the same procedure in reverse however be careful not to go past or much past your scribed lines when tightening the pinion nut or you'll possibly end up crushing the pinion crush sleeve even further and mess up your rear end adjustment.  I recommend reinstalling the pinion nut with a long handle rachet and only using the impact of necessary to get that last half or quarter turn to get the pinion nut back to it's starting place.

Also if you have a leaky pinion seal it's best to replace that during this process too.  Good luck.

Thank You! Looks like a job for a real mechanic. Any idea where to order a replacement and whether it is cast or forged? I have looked at NPD pg 150 & 151, and I am not sure which to order for my 69 12 bolt.

My 12 bolt yoke was badly worn in the seal area and lead to a leak. I used this and was very satisfied how accurate it looks to the original.
