1969 Z/28 spare tire hook size?
« on: May 02, 2017, 08:33:31 PM »
So I am doing some "research" for a 69Z, and it is missing the spare tire hook. I checked my neighbors stock 68 Camaro, and his is 8.5. I asked Gary on here and he had a couple, one of which is 9.5. So my question is what is the correct size for a 69Z, and was it exclusive to the Z, for any reason. Anyone with a 69 and a original spare tire hook size please chime in with the length.

(BTW this is for an early Los Angeles 69Z , if it makes any difference)

thanks

thanks for the link. There is no way it is 6", for the YH/AD spare
I have a 7.5 on hand, and it is to short.
I think either the 9.5 or 9.75 has got to be the correct one.

Come on 69 Z owners, take 120 seconds out of your day and unfasten your wing nut and measure that Hook. thanks

The 1969 AIM shows the J-Hook used in 1969 Coupes with PW7/PW8 (F70-14) tires was P/N 3929975. Although the Z28 doesn't show a different J-hook being used, I would imagine it would have been the same 3929975 as the F70-14 wheel/tire combination.

The P&A's are all very confusing regarding the J-Hook part numbers. One book will say WITH such and such, and another one will say WITHOUT!! And this is for the same part! This is one of those items that can only be determined by someone with an original car.

Come on guys. There must be SOMEONE with an original 1969 Z28 that can answer this question.

Sad part for me is I have one, but my red car is in the midwest, so to far away to measure currently. Initially I thought this was an easy question...
its funny how some basic (mass produced) parts like this get over looked when you already have them, but when you need to know about them, they are a little harder to run across.

Yes! And for sure they are phosphate and not zinc. What many do is take a new one, glass bead the zinc off and phosphate.

Or.....Just dip the zinc plated part into a mixture of 20% water and 80% muriatic acid and in a few minutes the part will be bare steel and ready for phosphate.

Thought I'd add that I happened to come across this reproduction j-bolt on ebay, looks close to the originals in finish, length and rod diameter. I asked the seller to confirm length and he said 9.75"
http://www.ebay.com/itm/401010243610
I've bought one because Mike (rszmjt) said the bolt in his 69 RS/Z is 9.75", in the older thread I linked to above. Whether 9.5" or 9.75" doesn't matter (maybe several original suppliers anyway) since my current bolt is about an inch shorter. Will post findings on receipt.

Ah, then you'll get yours first Bryon, mine is heading via the ebay global shipping program; according to tracking info it just paid a third visit to Chicago before (hopefully!) a plane ride via LA to Sydney.....

Well, after all the circling around Chicago, the hook made it to Sydney via Tokyo in only 24hours, and then headed west to arrive in this morning's mail. I'd describe it as natural in finish rather than phosphate like the originals, but easier to plate than first having to remove a silver zinc finish like most other reproduction hooks.
The overall length is 9.75", threaded length is about 5 3/8", and the rod diameter is 1/4".
For $6 plus shipping, I'm very happy.

The P&A 34 parts book from Feb 1969 suggests one part for most 69 coupes (3929975).  Space saver tire option used a different hook (3949607).

No reason for there to be a special hook just because it's a Z28.

The only reason I might guess about would be the wider/larger wheel (15x7) which might require a longer hook... ?

Looking a CBTN, the offset for the 69 Z28 15" wheel is .30" and the offset for the other wheels is anywhere from .26" to .50" (depending on the wheel). Since the 15" wheel is actually less than most of the others there would be no reason to use a different hook for the Z28.

Gary was that on the threaded or threaded section? I didn't try to measure that aspect accurately, just used the rule shown in the picture above and got ~1/4".

My hook that Tim mentioned on EBay arrived today. 9.88 inches total length, 5.32 inches threaded, width of hook 2.19 inches, diameter varies from 0.272 to 0.278 inches. Not the same as original - but for me, it will work. :)

I mic'ed the shaft in a part that was UNthreaded...  The shaft 'seemed' visually to be the same diameter everywhere, and I only measured at one location.

I looked at the print for 3949607 Spare Wheel Bolt (UPC 10, page A2) the other day.
Overall length was about 9.4" (it's measured to the radius, hence not exact). 8.36" from the hook side to the end. About 2.1" hook width.
5/16-18 threads. Zinc plate, with optional hot galvanize or phosphate.

Ed, 'offset' is measured from the CENTER of the wheel, so one would add (or subtract) the offset from  (1/2 the wheel width +1/2") to get the 'offset from the front or back of the wheel.   So a 7" wide wheel would require a longer bolt than a 6" wheel (with the same offset).

As usual, the thread got the best of me - I had to go dig out the hook from the Z - looks to be slightly shorter than the other examples from 2017, maybe .250 ? Held the YH spare in the trunk since I bought the car in '73, would bet it's original - opinions ?
