'68 Front Bumper Guards..
« on: March 21, 2017, 11:38:56 PM »
Don't have (can't find) it.. my AIM right now..  ::) as I'm sure it would tell me the answers to my questions here - but.. I was wondering if adding bumper guards to the front of a '68 required drilling any holes into the bumper itself or would leave any obvious ones in the valence if I installed some?
I always had guards on the front and rear of my cars 'back in the day' and although I never really liked them all that much on Camaros, I must admit they have sort of grown on me in the past while and I would consider adding some to the front of 'ol Betsey if I don't have to do anything to the actual bumper or lower valance that wasn't really obvious or permanent in the way of marking either, so if the look doesn't do it for me, at some point in the future, I could always 'go back' easily!
Is there also a specific mounting point that all guards have to sit at in order to fit correctly or is the distance outwards from the centerline of the bumper open to preference of the installer or taste to a degree?
Thanks - Randy

Would any holes show up in the valance front or would they be under the edge enough not to be apparent if the guards were removed - and is there a specific mounting or support area of the valence itself where it is  reinforced specifically to support the lower guard attachment?
Thanks..

There was a little strip of paper that came with accessory guard that you taped to the bumper that helped you put the guards in the correct place. I doubt I could find that strip of paper today. Once you drill the hole, there's no going back. The hole will be visible if you take the guards off. I could measure mine if that would help...Joe

I very much appreciate the offer Joe - but if the holes are easily apparent once drilled that probably would be sufficient enough to dissuade me from mounting some in the end.
As I mentioned, I am not probably not completely enthralled with the look enough to commit to having them on permanently (thus my original mounting questions about position / holes etc. in the first place) and since my Z 2/8 didn't come with them originally, mounting any would just be a day 2 kind of thing to sort of match up the front to the rear - and a problem down the road if I wanted them off at some point...
Thx - Randy

I had posted up a copy of that paper strip here years ago.  Was with a NOS set I bought long ago.  I can probably dig is out again if you need it.

Short answer if you do like the look enough to change things up occasionally, Purchase and Paint a spare lower valance to go with it. I'm thinking of doing a spare deck lid for my 67 SS with the spoiler. we all know that 67's didn't have a spoiler option but sometimes we still like the look.........

Dutch,
If you have them already mount them without the lower bolt, the rears do not have the extra support.  Don't scratch the paint!

Yea - considering the backs as you say aren't bolted at the bottoms that would make sense - even a scratch from rubbing is better than having a drilled hole in my World.. and No VT,  I haven't any at this point yet..
Which brings me to the obvious next question:
Who makes the best ones when it comes to finish and fit? I assume some are better fitting and/or have better chrome than others just like all the other brand new "NOS' (wink) ones..
Is there is actually a range of quality and pricing on such things?
I'm open if so to suggestions from anyone who has bought or fitted any!
Again - I appreciate all of the feedback here - Randy

Did find my AIM today finally..  ;) but couldn't find any pages that mention or display pictures of bumper guards let alone mounting dimensions (except one for a short rear cancelled revision) so in the end it wouldn't have been as much of a help as you guys have been anyway - so again - Thank You for your input..
