Data plate info
« on: March 15, 2017, 02:36:01 AM »
So I have this 1969 Denver Hugger camaro. I'm wondering why there isn't a number 9, after the 12437. It's blank! I'm trying to do some research, and that confused me. Any one know why?

The number on the body tag is technically the model number. It does not contain the last digit of the model year as the VIN does. Models were coded as follows:

1=Chevrolet
23=6 cylinder engine
24=8 cylinder engine
37=hardtop
67=convertible

For reasons not known Fisher Body did not fully adhere to this. Fisher stamped and referenced the body tag during body fab. They only used 12437 and 12467.

When the VIN tag was created by Chevrolet, the model number was correctly specified:

12337 = 6 cylinder hardtop
12437 = 8 cylinder hardtop
12367 = 6 cylinder convertible
12467 = 8 cylinder convertible

^ and the body tag already has the model year in the upper left corner, in your case 'ST69'.

....

For Fisher Body work, they didn't care whether the car would be outfitted with 8 cyl or 6 cyl engine..
ie. it didn't matter~

Depends on who did the firewall piercing. 6 cylinder cars are slightly different.

William:  Can you be more specific about this.   My statement was based on 'assumption' (not knowledge), but you have some specifics that I'd like to know...  Where are they different?  and WHERE was the piercing done?  I assumed the firewall piercing would have been done before paint...?

6 cylinder cars used a throttle cable rather than a rod. This required additional holes. The cable assembly instructions reference the UPC piercing instructions so it is possible it was done during final assembly. Not certain.

Ah, Gary.... you know that after writing that, some of the regulars here will challenge your every statement, unless quantified. Especially that HO is the best color for '69 ::)

Data plate?  Do you mean the tag on the firewall, or the VIN tag on the dash?
