68 Rear Spoiler
« on: March 09, 2017, 09:28:18 PM »
Any markings or way to verify 67/68 original GM rear spoiler from reproductions?

There are no original GM rear spoilers for '67. ;)

Well it's supposed to be a 68 spoiler. I didn't even think about 67.  ::) Actually, it's for my early 69, which now has the longer 69 spoiler, in case I ever go back to original. Is that confusing enough?  :P

So basically you want to know how to identify an 'early 69 spoiler' (ie. a '68 spoiler)  from a reproduction, because you want to look for and purchase a correct early '69 spoiler once you find one?   :)

I would suppose there would be a PN on the underside of it, or other factory markings, but since I've never had one loose in my hands...  I cannot tell you what those are..  but I'm sure someone here can do so.. :)

The irony here is that the guy I bought the Z from had the original spoiler/deck lid when I bought the car. It's on a list of extra parts I was supposed to get. For some reason he replaced the deck lid and spoiler when he had the car painted. But in the thrill of the moment at that time, I over looked it and so did he. That was 35 years ago. So I would have had the original spoiler/deck lid with original paint. I did get the original flat hood, which is still original paint. Oh well.   :-\

Maybe he still has it? or his family does? have any contact info for him?

I know another member that has a 69 Z and left the flat hood when he purchased it. this was like 10-15 years ago, and he says the seller still has it.

I also have a long spoiler on my 69 SS, but my Nov 68 build rear antenna car shouldn't have a spoiler. I planned to remove it during the restoration/paint, but my wife and the shop guys convinced me to keep it. I'm sure I will hear about it at the car shows...but will it be smarty-pants "You're car should have the short spoiler" or smarty-pants "You're car shouldn't have a spoiler"...

Depends on how smart the on-lookers are... right?

By chance if someone realizes the rear antenna/rear spoiler "no no", are they really going to want to stick it to you and check your trim tag?

I doubt it. In fact it would not surprise me, if nobody noticed.

(The only way I could see someone saying anything is if they saw you pop the lid, and were extra careful about hitting the antenna)

Yeah, but I know.  :-[ If I had the short spoiler, it might not rub the antenna like the long one does. Anyone want to trade an original long spoiler for a short one?

Serious question though. If I did find a short spoiler, are the holes the same as the long one?

if you re at the point where you can run one or not, go with what you like not your wife or the shop guys.

Look at a bunch of images with/without, and long vs short.

If you know yourself, and you don't want any detractors for your own piece of mind, don't run it.

Weather you go short spoiler, or no spoiler you will be in the minority of 69 owners, since most non spoiler cars, jump right up to the long spoiler wether it was an early car or not.  Just like cowl hoods, most first gens have them now.

I think the car would stand out more without it, but easy for me to say since both came with my car.
I am looking for another first gen, and plan on running the flat hood, and hopefully no spoilers. (changes the look of the car)

I'm beyond the point of decision, holes weren't welded and paint is done. Putting the car back together as we speak. I like the spoiler look, but I know everyone else has one too. I've joined the 69 vintage camaro FB page, seeing all the spoiler-less original pictures makes me regret acquiescing. If it bugs me enough in the future, I'll take it off and repaint the deck lid.

You would think so or there would have to be a redesign or different punch/drill location on the deck lid. (Cook has the info on those cornered)
