Original Born with Battery Trays LOS NOR
« on: January 16, 2017, 10:12:27 PM »
Subject- Original born with Battery Trays found on 67-69 Camaro’s from LOS & NOR.
Realize many CRG members spend time on other Camaro websites but not everybody and thought this was a worthwhile subject to make sure it is documented and hopefully placed in the “Pictures and information of original details” section. Information on how this subject matter came up from MCACN show can be found in my build thread:
http://www.camaros.net/forums/133-build-projects/182584-time-another-68-z-28-restored-85.html
Special thank you to Steve who was able to show me examples of what is normally observed while inspecting original survivor type Camaro’s in Vintage Certification. Examining what is unique to original born with compared to GM service replacements include some things that can be seen and some not when installed.
Most noticeable is a tab where the battery hold down clamp bolts on. Please note I have not seen this tab on any service replacement battery tray to date and have observed some old ones on ebay for sale. A few examples including one Steve posted-

Darrell’s 03D 68 NOR L78

Danny’s 05E 68 NOR Z/28

Jerry’s 07C 68 NOR Z/28

Skip’s 07D 68 NOR Z/28

Steve showed this 01C 69 LOS

06A 69 by Yenko’s SSL78

Skip’s 09D 69 NOR Z/28

Now compare that tab area to this NOS service replacement. Different design!

The service replacements have the nuts used to bolt the tray in place from the bottom oriented straight. On every original born with tray so far each of the two nuts are oriented the same but each one is oriented differently from the other (see 01C 69 for good view).  Look at the tab of the examples and note how each one’s tab tapers from one end to the other.
Can anyone add to this? Here is a simple chart of examples which includes Jon's 67 low mileage take off which has correct oriented nuts.

Wonder how restored cars are finding original battery trays with tabs? I have not found one NOS tray that has a tab and again some have been very old NOS service replacements. Do you know when Legends made this tray their judging standard? I'm assuming its been in recent years similar to the battery hold down clamp?
Might be a good place with the battery tray to display the correct battery hold down which can be difficult to find along with the bolt with large 7/8" diameter captured washer used to fasten clamp to tray. These first two clamps clearly show how they came from the factory as they were removed shortly after leaving Norwood. They were dip painted a semi-gloss black color. I have found many are stamped with a "K", but have found "C" and one was clearly not stamped.

My 67 LOS and NOR have the original 'dimple' hold-down clamps. The LOS is stamped with K and the NOR with C. Maybe different geographic suppliers? When I restored the NOR clamp recently, after using body solder to fill in the pits, I actually dipped it into GM Reconditioning black twice to get that smooth texture free look.

Mike, can you report on your battery trays if possible? Glad you had your original clamps as they can be hard to find as they got ate up by the battery over time. Know they were used across the board on other GM products as our 67 Corvette has one as well.

Here is a NOS #3887588 and note the stamping that I picked up a couple years ago when Stahl's went out of business. The clamps noted so far on cars have had a single letter stamped. Has anyone noted this stamped battery hold down on a GM car?

Thanks to Chick for initiating this thread on 'battery trays' and hold downs/nuts etc..  :)

I couldn't remember what mine was; hadn't looked at it closely since I purchased a GM replacement for my 'rusty' battery tray after purchasing the car in the 76 timeframe...  Just went and looked...  doesn't have the tab as shown for that period cars...

So I suppose I need to 'look' for a replacement that is 'original', or at least 'original appearing'.   Ebay didn't have any originals, although a few later OEM NOS parts (without the tab) were out there.  I did see several reproductions (advertised correct- aren't they all?).. :)  , but several did have the 'tab' as shown by Chick on some original parts...

Is there a specific reproduction vendor that would be recommended if I wanted to replace my 'replacement' tray with a more correct one - with the tab?   Here are a few examples...

Thanks Gary! The best and only repro that has the tab and is very correct looking in several areas is the AMD battery tray being sold by several vendors and more jumping on board. Find your best price on the AMD tray and go for it.

Im not sure if this helps since I dont own it anymore, but this was the tray in my LOS 10c of 1968 built 69RS  I sanded and painted it with POR black but I dont have pics of it all cleaned up, just this one photo before I detailed it. Fun topic to follow. :)

I was looking at pictures of the AMD reproduction battery tray and it sure looks very accurate. It even has the rectangular nuts though the welded in position isn't the same.

That was my thought as well, Mike..  although I don't have my original, nor do I have great photos of an original..  The AMD appears to be a good choice for those of us who have previously replaced the original!

On the pictures of originals I’ve accumulated they all have a very similar pattern in making. The rectangular nut on the underside of the battery tray where the battery hold down fastens is oriented the same way on originals and also service replacements but 90 degrees off on the AMD reproduction.  Service replacements have all three nuts oriented the same but on originals each of the three are at different angles but each maintains that same ange from tray to tray. Originals always seem to have a slight angle in the tab and the tab corners have a distinct 45 degree type corner break or nice radius. Originals display a sharp depression from the dye used whereas service replacements seem to be more rounder and not distinct. Another view of the repro picture followed by Jerry’s 07C 68 Z/28 original battery tray with some arrows showing specific items.

OK, lets see about transforming one of those AMD battery trays to be a dead ringer for a born with rascal!
I started by carefully removing some of the corner weld on the rectangular nut, placed a bolt in the thread, and while supporting the tray on a vice gave the bolt a hit with a hammer. OK, it took a few hits but it came out.

Clean some burrs off, orient the rectangular nut correctly and tig weld back in from the top side because the clamp hides any small imperfections but the underside could be seen with a mirror or by feel. Special thanks to Lonny and East Coast Muscle Cars for the tig welding. I probably would have burned a hole clean thru.

Now by working the tab to match (I used hand files for a lot of this) with some sanding followed by a glass bead operation lets see how it compares to an original.
The top picture the AMD tray after rework compared to the bottom tray of Jerry’s original. Umm, looks good to me.
Next step a good coat of epoxy primer followed by a top coat.

Is there a possibility that the trays with the less-defined stamping in the hold down clamp area could be from an alternate/standby supplier, rather than later service replacements? I doubt that there was a sole supplier to the assembly plants, and each one may have had subtle differences in the stamping details.
I have noted on several trays that they have a row of 'K's or possibly 'X's stamped on the 2 rectangular nuts used to bolt the tray down, but these trays also lack the tab detail that you've noted as indicating assembly-line versions.

Could be Tim as the population accumulated is small but what helps is the range of gen I's from 67 to 69 that so far show the same characteristics. Maybe they had the same supplier but when production stopped for GEN I's and went to a different design for GEN II's they picked up a different supplier in the early 70's to make service replacements. So far all service replacements look the same from real old ones to more newer ones. Sellers on Ebay have NOS ones from $195 to $399.99 and none of them are correct.

Anyone else have or believe to have an original battery tray? Man these things are hard to find!
We have added an important one to the list with pictures as its the same design/year as what Jon had displayed on the Yenko site and also here in a different thread but will post both of them. One item that seems to be the same on all original trays are the three nuts are oriented differently but each of the three maintains the same angle/orientation from one original tray to another.
Updated list:
67               DaveV same design as Jon's No tab with angled nuts
67               Jon’s 1100 mile take off-No Tab- Has angled nuts

The fangs may likely be worn tooling, IMO. Much like how we see NOS panels with some rough cuts that don't appear on others of the same type.

I was looking at pictures of the AMD reproduction battery tray and it sure looks very accurate. It even has the rectangular nuts though the welded in position isn't the same.

Mike
Possibility Mike but would think that might be seen in late 69's, not 67's. I'm wondering if it had something to do with there was no material there so when pressed the two fangs as I called them was the start of forming the tab but with no material it never formed.

Yes what makes this one even better is the angled nuts are correct. We know they are not seen when battery in place but that is a good one! That was 8 years ago and my searching did not come up with that one so hopefully its still around.

I called and spoke to Ron; after checking he said the supplier for that battery tray was no longer producing them, and that the AMD was the only producer....  That's a shame as I was very impressed wtih the accurate detail that supplier had designed into their tray!   the AMD battery tray is like most of the AMD stuff... at the large scale, they do a pretty decent job, but then they fall down on the small details (like the orientation of the nuts)...

The good news is with some modifications as outlined and battery in place it can be made to look very correct.

Chick - did try and post a picture of mine here tonight - but didn't have any luck.. Suffice to say the picture that I couldn't attach shows the angled nut on the tray bottom as I mentioned previously and the tab on the end slightly angled.  I finally gave up -you'll have to take my word for it!
Couldn't believe how scruffy my tray actually was when I looked closer after removing the battery, which should have been done months back - but after 49+ years..

Wonderful thread!  But one question, do the 69 hold downs have the two dimples too?  I am sitting in front of my computer with a NOS battery tray with sticker 3893882 and can see the differences noted here.  But it looks like there is extra metal on the hold down tab.  So I think with a little trimming, it can approximate the tab.  My GM hold down does not have the dimples but has the rocketship stamp like a pic here.  Maybe a little time in a press will fix that :D

On the 69 models I've looked at that were original cars they have had the two dimples. Skip's late 69 09D Camaro has it and our March built 69 Nova that we ordered in Feb.69 have it for a quick two examples. Used on many GM cars over several years. The hold down that has the "rocketship stamp" (good one) I've only noted on very old service replacements. Survivor cars or used original two dimple hold downs seem to have a single stamp. "C" is a common stamp found.
On the tray Kevin, I actually did that to a GM service replacement tray I had and probably in a car it would look the part. What it would not have is the slight kink/bend in that tab area but possibly a press could accommodate that.

At Chick's request, here are a few photos of the original battery tray pre-restoration compared with an NOS tray. In addition to the "tab" there are a few other subtle differences as shown:

Thanks!  Restoration vs Preservation are bookends apart. Preservation of a mostly complete car is a matter of verifying for originality, cleaning and detailing, (sometimes) locating those parts that have seen service replacement or Day 2 removal and then maintaining.  Restoration is also verifying for originality however it extends to many other processes. I enjoyed the preservation process and am equally enjoying restoration. Having owned and studied a survivor it has made the restoration process much better.

Time and bodywork. Following media blasting and grinding with rotary Scotchbrite discs, fill the deep voids and any uneven areas with JB Weld as the weight of the battery on regular filler risks cracking. Use regular filler to skim coat followed by high build primer then sand and repeat until a smooth paintable surface is achieved. Paint with 30% semi-gloss black.
