Side terminal battery cables for late 69 ss396
« on: January 04, 2017, 03:04:22 PM »
I would like to go back to side terminal battery & cables on my 08E of 1969 Camaro SS396. In the AIM it calls for 6296652 neg & 6297689 pos. Lectric Ltd has different part numbers for that car. Am I missing something here? Thank you, Joe

Joe, the AIM (UPC L35, Sheet A15, numbers 3 and 4) show the part numbers to be 6296652 (neg) which is actually a typo. It should be 6297652 with an FA code. The positive is 6297685 with an AT code. What does Lectric Ltd show?

hi Ed
They show a 6297652 for negative & he didn't have the stamp number for the positive. Heartbeat City shows 6297652 FA, neg & 6297685 AT, pos.

I tend to agree. Either LECTRIC LTD or M&H ELECTRIC or AMERICAN AUTOWIRE.

For Small block V8 engines, Heartbeat's sidemount battery cable PNs are WRONG... (based on the original cables from my (late)  09C Z28...)

The embossed PNs for the small block sidemount cables are WRONG on the Heartbeat site..  they show GM part# 6297650 AU (length 34.5") for Neg cable.  Maybe their number is correct for 6 cyl engines?  but is incorrect for small block V8 engines, as my '69 Z28 original cable is marked with  6297651 AV.     My original POS cable is marked   6297684 AS, which is also different than the # 6297683 AR, cable length is 43 3/4 inches, which Heartbeat lists as correct for small block V8s.   I've a feeling their numbers are for 6 cylinders rather than small block V8s.

Maybe one or more of our 6-cyl Camaro owners cars still have their original battery cables, in that 6-cyl cars generally do not get modified as often as V8 cars.  It would be interesting to see an original 6-cyl battery cable from a '69 Camaro... Anyone?

Joe,

May I suggest calling Mr. Don Bock, the R&D manager of American Auto Wire at 856-933-0801, ext. 216.  He IS Da Man.  He helped me with the 651AV and 684AS cables for the 302.

If you can do a little research on your 396 cables, especially the H. P. rating.  If the 6297652FA and 6297685AT are correct, then Don can help you.  American Auto Wire is the source!  LL and Heartbeat are the middlemen, and can NOT help you.  Call Don!

I changed mine back to side mount also last March. 08D SS396. I did a lot of research before I bought them and, as much as I hate to admit it..., I bought them from Heartbeat.  EGP-1156 and EGP-1154. With discounts at the time, they were cheaper than elsewhere @ $47.16 each.
For what it's worth, don't bother asking Jim (the owner) @ Heartbeat any questions. He'll lie to your face if it makes him a buck. Always verify what you're buying there.

at one point I was looking at reproduction battery cables. I still haven't seen a correct Delco packard cable made with the "Delco eye" on the end, and the bolts are incorrect looking. Maybe they have made some improvements? Bryan can you post some pics of yours?

Called Don as you suggested. Very nice guy & seems to be very knowledgeable. The numbers that were posted here 6297652 FA & 6297685AT will be correct for this car. Also looked up plug wires. Said because of how late the car is, 3Q69 would probably be as close as I could get. Thank you, Joe

Joe,
Your welcome, Hope it works out for you.

Austin,

I talked the AS / AV situation over with Don.  I asked about all the correctness, and what was, and what wasn't correct.  The AS / AV cables made today DO NOT have the Delco eye!!  This deduction was all about the mold and the expense of the mold verses the sales of the cables!!!  If we ALL would buy the absolute correct cables, and pay the price, what ever that might be, (I'm GUESSING 75.00 to 100.00 each.), I'm sure we could sweet talk them into building a correct mold.

That said, the AS / AV cables are exactly dead nuts the correct length, the ends are very close, the part number and code are dead nuts.  The bolt sizes are both 3/8", (but how many collectors have an original Y77 stashed in their closet?).  We are going to Delco, NAPA or whatever and get a battery, and use a topper anyway!  So, if you did have the correct 5/16 and 3/8, you would have to make a bushing.  With all this crap said, NCRS takes a voluntary deduction for battery and cables.  Most judges realize that this is the best that there is available.  And, if you do find an NOS cable, you probably won't be able to bend it, or afford it.

American Auto wire.
6297651 AV is pn#22705
6297684 AS is pn#43263
