No Better Place To Die: Battle of Stones River. Good book. I've been there to visit the battle sites in the late 90's and it was a solemn atmosphere like so many civil war locations.

Don't forget to get me some good doggy treats with the mints in them this year Darrell. This old Camaro bloodhound get's hungry! Went out to garage tonight just to make sure my sniffer was working fine. Sniffed out a deep groove pulley.

Battles during the civil war with the most casualties are listed here...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_costliest_American_Civil_War_land_battles

The numbers of casualties during this war were unbelievable... and sad...

I live about 10 miles from Antietam and my mom now lives in Sharpsburg. I've dug up more civil war relics in my back yard than Camaro parts, for sure.

One day we hope to vacation in Tenn. Wish I had time for the swap meet.  :-\

Being this is garage talk.........The Union victories at Antietam (debatable) and Stones River is just what Lincoln needed to go forward with his Emancipation Proclamation. If he had done so earlier then it would have looked like a desperate act for the Union because it was losing on the battle fields prior to that. Another reason for the Emancipation move was political as it now kept England from intervening on behalf of the Confederacy (The Union in Peril...another great book).

Chickamauga battlefield is a real good place to go! Use to ride horses thru the area. Lot's of old cannons and has a nice visitor center there.

Tennessee ended up with a lot of pivotal (and tragic) battles of the war - Stones River (Murfreesboro), Shiloh, New Johnsonville, Fort Donelson, Battle of Franklin, Lookout Mountain, Chicamauga, lots of skirmishes, battles and assorted mayhem. If you ever want an interesting read, scope out Jack Hinson's One Man War - his struggle as a civilian sniper in the Land Between the Lakes area - great book.

But I digress. Waiting on the annual Stones River Battle - trying to outflank Cook and Sport for the elusive NOS Camaro part on the next table -

Regards,
Steve

We ride our horses at the battlefield. Its my favorite trail even though its an hour drive.
