Real Indy Pace Car or not?
« on: December 31, 2016, 07:33:01 AM »
Hey guys,

Just looking thru ebay and came across this 69 pace car.  Not sure if it is real or not.  The trim tag shows 02D and the VIN matches up to that  date range.  However, this would put it within the same range as the festival cars.  Yet this VIN is not on the list of the known festival cars.

So, I have a couple questions.  First, were there non-festival cars built within the date range of the festival pace cars?  And, what is your opinion on this being a real pace car or a fake?  The trim tag shows Z11, but we all know that can be done.  There is just way too many things that do not look right, even with just the few photos the seller posted.  There is no wood dash trim.  Someone added the console gauges as there is no clock, but I do know that not all pace cars had the gauge option.  The seller states he is unsure of the pedigree of this car as well.  So, based on the little bit we know, what is the overall opinion?

Known Festival Z11s appear to have been ordered by the Indy Zone in a grouping of maybe 75-100 cars. They have close, sometimes sequential, body numbers. VIN range is N607xxx-N612xxx. There was another grouping just after the first with later body numbers, VIN range N610xxx-N614xxx. While there is some VIN overlap no car in the later group is known to have been a Festival car. Not all 02D Z11s were Festival cars.

The car on ebay is N610176. He just posted a body tag pic: NOR 270519. IMHO not a Festival Z11.

02D was an exciting time to be at Norwood; that's also when 37 of the 69 ZL-1 Camaro were built. Three are in VIN sequence with Festival Z11s: N608761/N608762, N609237/N609238, N609395/N609396.

I have owned 2 pace cars without guages.  It was an option and not one of the mandatory options like the ZL2 hood or Rally Wheels. Should have a wood grain dash though

No gages on mine, either, but everything else is there as should be. March production -

The Z87 dash wood grain is there; the photos are dark. It is visible in the photo of the right seat.

The seats and steering wheel are obviously not OE.

Sharp eyes, William - the dash corner is visible in one shot, barely.

Seats are the "comfort" style sold by several vendors, overstuffed/extra padding. Firewall has been painted over - masking line shouldn't be there, too crisp, might explain the white paint on the tag.

Decent appearing car in spite of the extras and wrong equipment -

Steve
