67 ss/rs with ac. Brake modulator on frame question
« on: December 12, 2016, 07:40:55 PM »
I'm new here, I recently purchased a 67 camaro ss/rs 350 4 speed car with factory ac and 12 bolt rear with round radius rod.  My car has a factory one piece brake line with no modulator on the frame.  But all I've read states my car should have it. It it a Norwood car 01c build date. Car is 4 wheel drum. Power brakes. Any input is appreciated.

Probably because it's four wheel drum.

I'd say maybe, but I've found local camaros at car shows that were SS cars with drum brakes that had the valve and drum brakes.  I'm curious if there is more difference in usage from Norwood to los Angeles. That's one thing on the local cars I didn't look at.  I thought originally before finding the information on this site that the valve was for true SS cars. But that's not true either technically

From some of the articles that I've read, it seems that the A/C option dictated the valve to offset the additional front end weight. Mine is drum brakes and also has the valve.

Can anybody that has the valve state if your car is Norwood or Los Angeles?  And if your car has factory air or not.  My camaro is factory air with SS/RS.  It has the 12 bolt with round radius rod too.

04B LOS, coupe, SS/RS L35 w/TH400, round traction bar, power disc (front), has the valve
05B NOR, convertible, SS/RS L35 w/4SP, square traction bar, power disc (fronts), has the valve
Air conditioning wasn't available with the L35 or L78 (396) in '67.

Thanks Mike, I also noticed in my drawing post that the release date is 7-6-67.
That drawing you posted (L48/A7) is from an 1968 AIM. In the 1967 AIM, that exact drawing is titled 'Pressure Regulator Valve' on page UPC60/A9 and has no mention of L48. In the L48 section of the '67 AIM, there is no mention of that engine option requiring the valve. The only options that required that valve that I can make from the 67 AIM is C60 (air conditioning) or an L35 or L78 big block with the latter big blocks having much more weight than a small block with no A/C. Being the valve for the L48 is listed in the 1968 AIM makes me think that was included with the L48 option package for the 1968 model year. But it still doesn't explain why your 01C with A/C doesn't have it. The engineering drawing for that valve is dated 9-66 so I would think it should be installed on your car.

As for cars at show that have it or not, I would have to look at them to see if they are indeed real SS cars because there are so many clones out there.
  I hope this helps.
Mike

Thank you Mike, it's true on the 68 assembly manual for I don't own the 67 manual, I only noticed that it stated L48 car showing a drum brake in pic.  I just noticed the date at the bottom.  A lot of car show people I have chatted with never even knew about the valve on the frame.  It is such an interesting item on the car that is so intriguing to why some cars have it and others don't.

I guess I should state that GM knew why the valve should be there, but under their directions, I don't understand why my car i purchased did not receive the valve.

I have a 67 L30 with A/C in the shop that has the proportioning valve. I'll get the build date info when I'm there.

I would get rid or that glass fuel filter. A friend watched his car burn to the ground years ago because that filter failed. Run a hard line.

I agree sauron327.  I've only owned the car 2 weeks and it's on jack stands getting a thorough check through.  I'm planning on putting  the hard line back on. Along with a year correct intake.  Winter has started and time to spend money on other people's neglect :)

Weston your car is a perfect example of how I don't understand how the assembly line chose which cars received the valve.

Kurt S and Ed have been exposed to more research than I will ever know.  Is it possible at any time that maybe the valve failed and somebody could have replaced the line to one piece.  Maybe that the valve had no replacement available?  I would think somebody would just piece it together.  But the camaro i have isn't following assembly line rules.

What's the factory brake setup?  Also, is the partial VIN stamped on your L30 engine block?

FWIW, in the 67 AIM that sheet shown in reply #7 from the 68 AIM is found under UPC C60 Sheet A9, not under UPC L48.

Looking at the AIM sheet, it appears a thread cutting screw (p/n 9420625 isn't in the AMK catalog) was used to attach the valve bracket to the subframe.  So if it had the valve and it was later removed, you should find (unless it's too heavily rusted to determine) a subframe hole showing signs of threads cut in, just forward of the hole that the bracket tab goes in.  And if it never had the valve, I'm thinking there would be two subframe holes with no signs of threads cut in the forward hole.  I can't imagine that screw 9420625 was a self-drilling type that could cut its own hole through the subframe.

In my first post Pete I posted a pic of my brake line.  But illook at it closer to see if I can tell if there are any threads in the frame.

Drum brakes all the way around.
No Vin stamped on low hp cars.
Brother in law bought it off the lot. Have P.O.P and order sheet and order computer punch card for the Camaro. All numbers matching with original sheet metal. Just took the vinyl top off and had the roof repaired and repainted it the correct color and redid the seats, carpet and dash pad. Engine and trany have never been out off the car.

My 68 L30/M20 has the valve. Factory power brakes, disc/drum. Its a LOS built car, but all factory 12 bolt cars in 68 were supposed to get the valve.

weston- unless it changed between 67 and 68, your L30 block should have a partial vin on the pad. The L30 in my 68 does.

Sorry no partial vin on low HP Camaros in 1967 not required,  Only the valuable ones got the vin number stamped on them for insurance reasons. To many people stealing them. Yes in 1968 and after.

So I date checked my brake booster and it is a 69 Camaro drum booster.  So my car was manual drum brakes originally,. Maybe that makes the valve not a necessity, even though I have air conditioning
