68 L22 Clone
« on: October 11, 2016, 11:29:05 PM »
Got the engine (born in 72 ventura) and transmission (tko 5 speed) bolted together. 96 s10 4 cylinder clutch worked like a charm.

I'm glad to see someone has finally cloned a six cylinder Camaro to make up (in a small way) for the thousands of 1st Gen sixes that have been cloned into V8 cars  ::).  Great job, Russ!

Very cool. Does the shifter end up in the right place?

Hard to tell because of floor modifications, but shifter sits towards rear of shifter opening.

Looks pretty close. Should still be a comfortable fit. Really nice application.

What did you source the 5 speed from?

I purchased transmission from summit racing six years ago. Planned on using it in 69 SS. Plans change. After realizing how uncommon MC1 transmission is. I decided to keep 69 original as possible and the 68 gets the 5 speed. 69 is in pieces but that's another story.

I also transplanted the 8.5 10 bolt from 72 ventura. Had to shorten driveshaft 3/4".

OK, that makes sense on the trans.
Why swap rears? Different ratios?

Previous owner had stripped entire drivetrain. He did stick a 3.08 gear, 8.2" Nova rear end back in it, after cutting the spring perches off! So I figured the 3.08 geared 8.5" would be my cheapest easy solution. And if I decide to swap in a 396 at some future time, the stronger rear end is already there. For now I'm building for an economy car. 3.08 gear and 0.64 overdrive equal 1.97 final drive. Hoping that will get some MPG's.

Howdy all. Please don't laugh. Update on 68 RS. Drivetrain is fully functional, but car is not road worthy (no brakes). Luckily I have a big yard. So grand daughter rode shot gun on its first drive since 1979!

Howdy. Thought I'd share some progress. Not a professional paint. But the family time on the Camaro is priceless.

Howdy. Bought some factory doors yesterday. Included the guts and glass. Only had to go 1/2 mile down the road. My neighbor restored a '68 20 years ago and left these doors in the woods to rot.

Russ...I shipped the gift air cleaner to you today. I'm pretty sure it will solve your clearance issues. Let me know how it works out,
